Hello Märklineers,

Following some exploits elsewhere, last June found us in Zagreb :

UserPostedImage

There was some interesting light rail :

and also a quaint funicular railway from the "lower" to the "upper" town :

UserPostedImage

On the penultimate day to our departure we sought to visit the "Baco Mini Express", however :

Hi Philip,

interesting shots of Zagreb, thanks.
I noticed in Europe most (not all?) tramways seem to be metre gauge, unlike Australia where they are standard gauge.

Not all is correct, in Germany approximately five networks are standard gauge and seven metre gauge.

Hello again Märklineers,

The rail connection from Ljubljana to Trieste has only recently been restored (September 2018) see here :

https://www.seat61.com/v...-and-zagreb-by-train.htm

and so it was most convenient that we could now connect from Zagreb with our ultimate destination, Venice.

We departed Zagreb in this Croatian train (on-time) in 40 deg C , no air conditioning but good airflow with windows open :

UserPostedImage

The line basically follows the Sava River valley. We crossed the border with Slovenia at Dobova. Here a troop of armed agents flowed through, round and under the train checking personal IDs, luggage and (with grand torches) the undersurface of the train, looking seriously for I-know-not-what. Despite my usual cheeky form I dared not take any images of them! :

UserPostedImage

Some local rail traffic :

UserPostedImage

We changed locomotives at the border :

UserPostedImage

our Croat loco departing back :

UserPostedImage

and a Slovenian class 541 Taurus loco hooking up, we then departed into Slovenia for Ljubljana :

Hello once more Märklineers,

The journey from the Croat/Slovenian border to Ljubljana was picturesque :

UserPostedImage

We also passed through the hometown of FLOTUS :

UserPostedImage

Next we arrived in Ljubljana, pulled by the nice Slovenian Taurus:

And departed in the new train on this interesting route to Trieste ( as before, see here : https://www.seat61.com/i...roatia.htm#Zagreb-Venice ) :

On the way we again passed through pleasant country :

Hello Märklineers, the journey continues :

We then reached Trieste:

UserPostedImage

We had visited Trieste in the past, so we only transited ; it is a beautiful town with much history,
so changing over the centuries, since 1918 a part of Italy:

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

Finally, we left Trieste in the late afternoon:

UserPostedImage

and at last arrived in the dusk at our destination of the Santa Lucia Train Station, Venice :

UserPostedImage

where a few steps away to the Grand Canal we then proceeded to
our hotel in the late twilight – a full day of very enjoyable but tiring rail travel !! :

Hello yet again Märklineers,

When staying in Paris we like to travel by the Paris Metro Railway – no spot in Paris is far from a metro station and armed with “Paris par Arrondissement” you can travel anywhere:

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

Whilst in Paris we took a day trip to visit the Australian National War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, to which the new Sir John Monash Centre is attached.
The journey started by metro :

To the Gare du Nord :

Hey PJ.. I don't know if you have noticed, but I think that there is a woman stalking you on your trip.. She seems to jump into a photo once per day.. Like the second photo in your last post - Is she a French agent watching your suspicious activities.??? Confused

Hello Märklineers once again,

We next travelled to Biarritz, at the very south of the Atlantic (Bay of Biscay) seaboard of France near
the Spanish border, departing from Paris Montparnasse station.

The TGV was indeed V :

A scenic, comfortable and pleasant, if long, journey arriving in the late afternoon :

Biarritz is a nice seaside town, in the past a summer resort of the nobility and their rich associates,
now just the "beautiful people" - my impression was a bit like San Sebastian is to Spain :

Hello Märklineers , the last instalment!

After a short stay in Biarritz, we backtracked to Bordeaux which we have enjoyed in the past but has gradually changed.

Bordeaux has a clever electric light rail that has no catenary, nor exposed live rails - the electrics are buried
under the mid-track (similar to the Märklin centre rail !) and each section directly under the railcar is not
activated live until the front of the railcar is thereover (seen here as the railcar passes the opera house) :

UserPostedImage

Whilst in Bordeaux we visited Le grand dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe:

UserPostedImage

Thereafter we pursued more travel in Europe by land, air and sea but alas no more rail.

Regards,

PJ

Hi Philip,
I came across the same system in Tours (France) and the traction system really mystified me.
You have supplied the answer.

I'm sorry you couldn't see the Backo mini express layout. If you had announced me the day before, I would have organized a visit for you regardless of the holiday! This is also true of all other possible visitors, the layout is usually closed on Sunday and Monday but will open at the time of the announcement.

Dear Borna,

Thank you very much for your disingenuous remarks in passing.
It is the etiquette of this forum that the content of members’ PM’s is not
revealed here, a policy with which I agree and with which I will conform.
We both, however, know the truth of the situation.

With kind regards and best wishes,

PJ
