Anyone have any experience with the Sony HDR AS300 action cam to mount on railcar and shoot video of train?

Yes!

I have the first version of this camera, and have used it successfully as you describe. My first attempts was just placing it on an open waggon with a rubberband around. I placed the camera upside down to get the lens closer to the rail. I the used the Quicktime on a Mac to fix the upside down movie.

I have now made a foundation for the camera that fits nicely in an open waggon, with a 3d-printer.

I´m in The summerhouse right now but will get back to you with some pictures and movies. The quality of the movies is fantastic!

Good luck, Peder

Here's a picture of mine. I used it a few years ago to take video of my Swedish Ore train.. My version HDR-AS300 does 4K video... Looks awesome on the big screen, but gets mangled when converting to YouTube...

I've heard and seen great things from that Sony action cam. Mounted in a low riding flat car, the camera fits inside the profile space of model rail; I've seen videos of folks bringing their car+cam to a train show and some layouts allowing it to run around their show layout. That it comes with optical image stabilization gives it an edge on image quality of the smaller/less expensive cube-cams such as the Polaroid Cubes. The Sony has a narrower field of view (~95 deg) which means less of the fisheye effect (vs the the 120 deg of the Polaroid).
