Hello all:

I am contemplating building a "sectional" layout since my only hobby room is also used for slot cars (Carrera). I would like to go beyond "table-top" and start to have roadbed and ballast and some scenery.

My current plan is to build three sections with wood/foam that are 2 feet by 6 feet (60 cm by 180 cm approx) and are 2 inches (5 cm) high and then connect them with undecorated track.

the sections will be "yard switching/engine servicing", "industry" and "wilderness/mountains".

Here is the possible track plan for the "yard switching" section:

I would appreciate any comments or advice.

Cheers, Steve.

Hi Steve,

I think that your plan looks quite good. A few questions:

1. Are you modelling a North American or European prototype?
2. Which track is the mainline linking to the other parts of your layout?
3. It looks like you've got some elements of a "Timesaver Shunting Puzzle", or is that just my imagination? For operations are you just going to move things at random, or will you use some sort of waybill or puzzle system?

Thanks Carim:

1. Right now I have all traditional German DB-type locomotives but I could possibly see getting an American locomotive or two someday. I would probably take all the DB trains off the layout - to me it would be odd to intermingle them

2. Mainline- I'm not completely sure. I think a mostly single track mainline would be more interesting to operate but between the two possibilities I'm not completely sre.

3. Yes - I looked the timesaver and this is a modification of a plan I found online. I suppose I might try a waybill but I have never done that - sounds fun. But for now I will probably just drive trains around at first. I made the engine are 3 tracks and up front because I think the locomotives are the "star" of the show.

Thanks, Steve.
