Hello to all members:

I'm getting back to Marklin z scale after approximately 20/30 years, ( I also have Marklin HO) and I have between 30 and 40 locomotives but 90 % of them no longer run. What can be done to fix this problem? They don't run neither the lights turns on.
Thank you in advance, regards,

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

I would suggest you first look at this site http://www.zscale.org/articles/revival.html to identify your exact problems. You may be able to work out a solution just from reading that site, otherwise get back to us with more details about your problems.

Kind regards,
Carim

If the lights don't come on, there is an electrical pick-up problem (assuming the bulbs are good). Cleaning the wheels and the pick-up wipers that bear on the back of them might be a good place to start.

Hope that's some help!

Thank you Chris and Carim, very interesting the site, has a lot of information about z scale. My idea is to disassemble each loco and clean them with the ULTRASONIC JEWELRY CLEANER. My question is if is safe to use the ultrasonic liquid solution.
Thanks again, regards,

Carlos

I have no experience with ultrasonic cleaners; but I'd guess you would need to state what the liquid is to have any idea whether it will impact the plastics/metals that go into a Marklin loco. I use isopropyl alcohol to clean my locos but I do it manually.

Be careful here. Make sure the motors don't burn out when you try and run them. If the lights come on then stop the power. Step two is check contacts, and step 3 would be likely gear lock due to old oil. It is well documented here and online how you can break things free, but a warning abut those motors as they burn easily!

Thank you for your advice. I'll be cleaning the gears and wheels with isopropyl alcohol.

You have 30-40 locos? Wow! You have a task ahead of you...

Do the lights "turn on" on any of them? If not, the first place I'd check would be your power source. Is some lights do turn on, then I'd start with those engines first.

And yes, a complete disassembly and careful cleaning and re-oiling will no doubt be needed; that should do the trick.

Best of luck and let us know how it's going.

Hi Mark, yes that’s is what I decided to do; a complete disassembly, cleaning and re oiling. 4 of them have been already fixed and they run as in the 80/90s. Sure, it will take a long time but is worsth.

Regards

Carlos

Awesome.

Nice thing about those old Marklins; they seem to respond very well to a good cleaning...

Keep us posted...and have fun!
