Good morning everyone,
I have a 24620 and would like to use a 74491 Turnout Mechanism. Unfortunately Marklin doesn't make 24620 anymore but only 24624 and I can't find documentation of this switch to see if 74491 is the correct motor to use.
Do you confirm ?
Thank you

The 24624 came fitted with motor, where the 24620 came without motor.

I believe the reason for the change was that the motors had problems in the 24620, or that people had problems fitting the motors and getting them to work reliably. I don't know if the 24624 has a beefier motor or if the mechanics of the mechanism were reworked.

The 74491 should fit, but I would make sure it is working correctly before installing it permanently, and make sure you can access it in case of failure.

Although they don't sell it any more individually as 24620 it still comes as part of start up track extension pack 24905.The operating manual for 24905 states that it can be electrified with 74492 which is simply a 74491 with different coloured wiring and plug for start up controllers hence 74491 is perfectly acceptable for normal use. As KA states and I have read the 24620 did have problems when fitting the turnout motor in that its a bit fiddly and you may end up with a box of springs and bits. I have one and it works OK.

I've used a 74491 in a 24620 without issue.

The 74491 is of course an update from the 74490 (or so they say) and the 24620 was from the brittle plastic era date range. The 24624 did come with a fitted motor yes, the 74491, but I think that was more likely a timing thing release wise (note the color stripe on the box from blue to grey) as an example of that logic.

That being said, I think you'll have no issues using a 74491 in your 24620, but if you're really concerned, send me a PM, I have a couple of 74491's laying around

I have fitted a 74991 to a 24620 with no difficulty at all. The only thing you should watch out for is the 24620 itself. I have found some are quite stiff and the motor then can’t throw the point blades the full distance causing derailments and other such mayhem.

thank you everyone. I'm waiting for the next batch of 74491s to be delivered and then I'll give it a go.
This time though I'll be using the m83 decoder to see how this way to go digital with switches works compared to the digital decoder that goes under each switch.
Keep you posted

You can save money by purchasing separately from AJCKIDS all of the items included in the C5 extension set, excluding the 24620 double switch, then add the updated 24624 switch. AJCKIDS wants $152 for the C5 set that includes the outdated 24620. If you buy the track components individually along with the 24624 from AJCKIDS they'll only charge you $129 for the entire package. Go figure. Somehow that logic is lost on me, but I like the idea of saving $25 while still getting the motorized crossing switch. It must have something to do with the "new math" being taught these days.

Back on this topic :-)
I have retrofitted the 24620 with the 74491 and all works fine and very smoothly.
No point in opening threads if there is no follow up on how things went !!!
The problem is finding the original post !!!
Thank you
