Hello, I have an original 8800 locomotive purchased in 1973. It runs as well now as it did when I first got it. Since then I have purchased many additional engines and have noticed a noise issue metal vs plastic. As an example, when I run my 8800, body on or off, it is extremely quiet. I have a Santa Fe diesel that when I run it, it is exhibits a noisy mechanical sound, but if I remove the body it is as quiet as the 8800. I keep the engines is decent condition lubrication, cleaning etc., but I can't get the newer plastic bodied engines, 3 or 5 pole, to run as quietly as my little 8800. Any thoughts?

Welcome! ThumpUp

On some models, the body can resonate sound quite noticeably although I have to say I've not heard of it with Mini-club and you keep them maintained with lubrication etc.

You may be able to add a damper such as thin strips of insulation tape to the inside of the body and see if that helps?

What controller are you using?

I think damping is a good idea, try putting some putty inside to add weight?

That may be a tough thing to "fix"; it seems it's the very "nature" of the body is to resonate sounds from the mechanism. The same thing happens with the Micro Trains F units: removing the shell really quiets things down.

I've read (maybe here) of using some sort of tape, but I think one should be careful of that, since it seems that would trap heat and run the risk of shell damage...plus, in my own limited experience, Marklin engines are pretty quiet "as is".

If someone does come up with a viable solution, they should receive an award!

Not a lot of space for that in a Z-gauge loco Dale! Wink RollEyes

If your locos are used mainly at exhibitions, a bit of noise is no problem as the background noise in an exhibition venue will render that from a loco inaudible!

Just for laughs, I tried that with my #8875; I used blue painter's tape, since it doesn't leave any residue.

I used small pieces: (2) layers in (2) different areas inside the shell, and I have to say I think it may have worked. It does seem almost as quiet now with the body on as it does without the shell...I think. Mellow

Just an FYI...
