One of the scenery kits that I have had lying around for years to build is a version of Pola 1030, a village church. Most of is is straightforward, but I am intrigued by the back wall, which has a square mid part that is smooth, as opposed to the surrounding masonry:

I would guess there should be a fresco or similar on the smooth part, but i can't readily find a real-world example. If anybody knows the purpose of the square, please advise?

Is there not a decal or sticker included to put in this area?

The instructions should indicate what should be placed there. As Ray says a decal or maybe there is a missing part.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Just a guess, that looks like the back of the church which usually is a stain glass window.

Thanks, all, for your input!

The instructions (virtually graphics-only) give no indication whatsoever of a possible fill-in (there is no decal or other part either), and as Åke writes, photos online look similar to the one I posted above.

Indeed, as Fred writes, I would expect (a) stained-glass window(s) in the wall behind the altar, but I think the single big square would then have to be divided into at least two windows. A structural reason for the smooth wall part seems unlikely too.

I think I'll pretend that there was a painting that has deteriorated over the run of time, so that i can add some vague forms on a background of faded white.
