Hi all,

I'm over for a conference for 4 days (I know I'm mad - 39 hours flying for 4 days!) and manage to get a day to myself in Orlando on a Saturday and half a day (Thursday) in San Francisco on the way back to Oz.

Any suggestions of any model shops worth poking my head into?

I have no transport at either place but will be trying public transport to get around as needed.

I gather there's not much around now with the internet but thought it was worth checking out our forum members inside knowledge.

Cheers from down under...

Michael

Colonial Photo & Hobby in downtown Orlando:

Half of the store floor is dedicated to model railroading, albeit „only“ a North American sortiment.

San Francisco: Sadly most options have dried up over the past 10 years. (especially as the commercial real estate to buy/rent has more than doubled) Talbots Toyland in San Mateo has some new Marklin, but is a good 30 minutes from SF. There is AC euro trains in Stockton but that is maybe 2 hours away.

IMHO the best "model" shop is D&J hobbies in san carlos, but not a lot of trains, and the best "train" shop is literally called "the train shop", and is located in santa clara. No european stock there except LGB but your head will explode- it is an impressive place with a mammoth stock.

With only half a day I think taking in some tourism will be the better bet...

Absolutely correct, San Francisco no longer has any train stores within its boundaries. It is sad. There is another train store north of San Francisco in Novato. It is called Dollhouses Trains and More. They are a Marklin dealer and they do have some older and newer Marklin items. I haven't been there in a while.

Orlando - Germany Pavillion Epcot World Showcase Toy Store in 2010 did stock some Marklin items. There is also an LGB layout out in front of the pavillion.
