Good evening fellow Marklin enthusiasts,

I have an option to acquire a Marklin 4097/6 horizontal steam engine which is powered by mains electricity. Unfortunately the electric components are missing. Does anyone know:
how the mains electricity was used to heat the boiler. On inspection there does not appear to be an electric element fitted inside the boiler?
Is it possible to get replacement parts and where could they be purchased?

Looking forward to your responses,

John

Hello John,

this steam engine does not really look like a MRR one.Laugh The real problem is: it is a steaming engine not movable. Smile Anyway, I guess I found a video for you (in English!!!).

Perhaps it helps. I do not know, because I cannot understand his English slang.

Regards

Thank you TEEWolf.

I have seen those videos. I agree it is difficult to understand what the guy in the first video is saying. He is firing it with a gas burne.r The engine I am looking at is in bad shape. A previous owner has painted everything black and made very poor repairs to the pipework as well as stripping the electrical heating system from it. It would be nice to restore if I could get the parts.

Hi John,

I have never heard of an electrical version of the 4097/6. Maybe it was used with an after-market electrical heater. Usually these machines ran with alcohol. In your case you need the burner 6051K.

See this list for sources for spares: http://www.schiffmann-ve...ersatzteilhersteller.php . I would ask Mr. Bachor first, next would be Mr. Berendt .

Markus,

Thank you for your message. To the best of my knowledge the 4097/6 or 4097/91/6 El was listed in the 1931 catalogue. Check this site: https://www.brightontoym...gory:M%C3%A4rklin_Steam. Since I posted my original message I have been advised that the engine I am interested in is a Marklin 4136/6/91 EL see this website: https://www.tapatalk.com...in-electric-t53854.html. Unfortunately I cannot get any information on how the boiler was heated by electricity. There does not appear to be an element in the boiler. The search continues.

My memory of these things is that they were always heated by an alcohol or meths burner with a wick etc. I think I also remember little white bricks of fuel but that may have been for a British stationary steam engine (probably made by Mamod).

Hi John,

I missed the version you mentioned. The boiler at electrical powered engines was heated from outside. The heating element looked similar to this example from WILESCO ( https://www.ebay.de/itm/273330673260 ) but had some additional insulation made of asbestos.

Hi Markus, Michael~ and TEEWolf,

Markus, your link to the Wilesco listing is useful. It has given me an idea as to how the boiler may have been heated, All I need now is to find an element that will suit my engine. Do any of ye have any idea where I might get an age appropriate electrical socket for the burner housing into which the power lead would be plugged. Is there any dealer in Germany who deals in vintage electrical fittings? The engine owner has given me the engine to examine and assess before I agree to buy it. The engine is a 4136/6/91 EL manufactured pre 1930.

Looking forward to any further suggestions

Hello John,

I googled "Märklin 4136/6/91 EL" just to see what comes up. It was your post here at marklin-users.net and another one with interest for you from Christie's. It is quite old and in English, but this is better for your understanding than mine.BigGrin But there are prices shown as well. Amazing prices for me.

Another track my be seeing this videos here:

https://viyoutube.com/ch...7hj4A/manfred%20.lamberz
https://viyoutube.com/vi...%A4rklin%20el%204136%206
https://www.youtube.com/...UCwhpQcv3LeujChvtl47hj4A
https://www.ikz.de/nc/de...bau-lamberz-in-ober-olm/

These videos are issued by a person named Manfred Lamberz. Under this name I got a Person in Ober-Olm which is close to Mainz and Wiesbaden. If it is the same person I do not know, but I guess yes. Because this Manfred Lamberz has his own company for building masonry heater.

http://www.kachelofenbau-lamberz.de/index.html

and he is a surveyor for these types of stoves.

https://www.gutachter-in...utachter/manfred-lamberz

I think that your steam engine is not so far away from these stoves and maybe it is this man's hobby. As you see by the videos under this name Manfred Lambertz are plenty and different of these steam engines are published.

What are you thinking?

Regards

Wolfgang

Wolfgang,

Thank you for your message and the links. Manfred Lamberz has a lot of nice videos. The seller has given the engine to me to examine. I will now examine closely to see if I can find out how the heating system works.

Best wishes,

John

Wolfgang,

Thank you for the information on Manfred Lamberz, I contacted him and he thinks he will be able to help me with some parts. Once I have the electrical parts sorted I will have to work on the boiler and repair a few small pieces on that.

Best wishes,

John
