Tasmainia derailment of driverless train

A Tasmanian rail company has temporarily suspended the use of remote control technology on freight services after a runaway driverless train derailed in Devonport.

Two people were injured by flying debris when authorities deliberately derailed the TasRail freight train to bring it to a stop as it neared the heart of the city on Friday morning.

No one was on board the train, which was loaded with cement and being operated by remote control from a loading yard - a method used for more than 15 years at Devonport

Jeepers, I bet the resulting damage to and from that runaway train would have paid the salary of more than one driver for many years.

Short-sighted corporate money-sucking greed is all it is. Thankfully no one was killed or injured.

But will they learn any lessons? fat chance!

I agree but the article said they'd been remote controlling the trains there for 15 years !!

So even more has been saved over time, now they will probably employ 1 driver short term and work him hard for little reward just to get the trains running again and pass some red tape and restrictions. If I were the drivers union etc I'd blacklist any attempt to employ a driver and let them rot

I'm wondering if they deliberately derailed the loco how come pedestrians withing 500 meters were allowed to enter the area?

Shoddy, very shoddy indeed

I'm wondering how they managed to derail the loco - and how that managed to stop the train. I guess the loco just couldn't get traction on the grass area.

Yes indeed they have.
It was a cement train. The route started a good distance from Devonport at Railton, where the Goliath cement works are. It was being loaded when it then started the journey on its own "initiative", i.e. without being started by the remote controller !

I have met a remote controller from Western Australia who controls big ore trains from an office in Perth

They used points to route it into a dead end section where it then hit the buffers, it seems, and then off the track.

As I understand it, debris from disintergrating wagons flew in the air over or through fence. They were half a kilometre away after all !
