Does anyone know the purpose to convert some BR 50 tenders with cabs?

Hi,

The cab was the working-place for the conductor. Until the early 1970s also some goods-trains had conductors. Inside was a desk where he did his paper-work. The cabs should reduce costs because the freight-train-baggage-car where he had his desk before, was not needed any more.

Thanks. Then why no other steam loco install a cab in the tender?

Hi,

The class 50 was most widespread class from the 1950s until the end of the steam-era. It was the typical loco for short- and mid - distance light-goods-trains where the reduced supply of these tenders was not important but which had a conductor. The regular tender could store 8 tons of coal, the modified one only 6.6 tons. At other classes (eg 44) that was important. In Austria also class 42 locos ran with an Austrian type of cabin-tenders which looked different from the ones in Germany.
The tenders were modified in the early 1960s when the end of the steam-era was already foreseeable.

Yes - and trains with diesel or electric locos did not need a freight baggage car because the conductor could use the (unused) cab of the loco.

In a Märklin catalog introducing that edition to its line up, I read that it was to facilitate the steam engine in switching operations. By then (1968), those remaining were relegated to such duties and to commuter train service, often in reverse, in which that addition would also assist.

Thanks for the info. I am repurposing the class 50 with cab to haul Ardelt 57t steam crane.
