Truly inspiring and revealing and enlightening were the maps.

My favorite one helps me understand the maze and craze of former and present RR lines in central Colorado.

When leaving I-95 at Portland, Maine, and driving overland near the coast, I was wondering about rail lines all over the place. Finally, On our way to our nearby motel, I stumbled over this turntable cum wedged roundhouse in Rockland, Maine:

https://en.m.wikipedia.o...rntable_and_Engine_House

2017rockland1me.jpg2017rockland2me.jpg2017rockland4me.jpg

Until 2015, the was even a seasonal FL9-hauled streamliner passenger service - see videos in post no. 49.

Rockland depot, where the streamliner used to terminate.

And now really the ultimate USA trip photos.

On another day, there was a loco parked next to the roundtable.

Thanks for the interesting video - I recognised some areas along the Douro, particularly around Pinhão.

We were cruising the Douro last month (that is like us you can see at 0:44 !) and encountered this more modern loco at Pinhão:

The other day I captured this diesel in 1970s livery pulling a red double-decker commuter train in Timmendorfer Strand, Germany.

DB 218 330-9.jpg

The shroud of mystery may finally be lifting, as „Lok Repot“ reported (own translation):

"On 01.10.2022 DB 218 330-9 (Krupp 5323/1975) was in service at Kiel central station. Since its last overhaul in Cottbus (Unt./BCS X/25.02.2022), the blonde [sic] locomotive based at Kiel depot has been repainted in ocean blue/ivory according to the 1975 DB color scheme. This color scheme was worn by the four-axle diesel-hydraulic mainline locomotive from its delivery in 1975 until 1988.

Exotic 218 330-9 is the last operational remotized BR 218, which is still equipped with a CAT 3516B HD engine with 2,060 kW (2,800 hp).

In 2001 and 2002, the three DB locomotives 218 329-1 (Krupp 5322/1985), 218 330-9 and 218 339-0 (Krauss-Maffei 19728/1975), which were all based in Lübeck at the time, received the newly developed engine variant from Caterpillar for comparison purposes. This was not able to prevail over the MTU variant, so that no further BR 218s were remotized with the CAT engine. DB 218 329-1 has been parked since the deadline expired, DB 218 339-0 was already dismantled in 2017.“

Just today "Lok Report" published a post about the train I photographed. Translation:

"The last days of February were used again to visit the replacement train of the regional train RB85 on the disused "Vogelfluglinie", and finally two desired motifs could be implemented. The first with the disused signal box in the northern entrance to Bad Schwartau station, and the second, south of Timmendorfer Strand station, at the end of the town there.

The consists were to be seen in each case again with DB Regio 218 330 and the regional train RB11619 at the signal box in Bad Schwartau and the regional train RB11615 at the exit of Timmendorfer Strand on the way to Lübeck."

Hello Ak and Philip,

Märklin released a museum locomotive in 2018, BR 217 014.
It has the same colouring.
#39270
But I am not sure what differentiates a 217 from a 218.

Kimball
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany the Bad Doberan (connection to DB trains) - Kühlungsborn passenger service route is worked daily with a dozen pairs of trains. The 900 mm narrow gauge line is relentlessly operating since the days of the German Kaiser.

Eastbound in Bad Doberan.

In Germany, DB AutoZug ceased to operate in October 2016 as these trains were not considered to be profitable. New motorail operators stepped, taking over the now abandoned motorail services claiming a sufficient market for motorail services in Germany. Last week at the motorail terminal Hamburg-Altona, Germany:

On track #11, an ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) mototrain is loaded, destined to Vienna and Innsbruck in Austria.

A litle bit later, after the departure of the ICE, an UEX (Urlaubs-Express) mototrain backed into track #10.

Once the lower deck was loaded, the ramp was lifted to reach the upper deck.

Motor vehicles were marshalled and secured on the ÖBB auto racks.

However, I was meant to travel by UEX (Urlaubs-Express) train to Lörrach, ...

...which in th meantime had been made available on track #10

When securing and lashing the vehicles, the flaps were folded up, too.

European Locomotive Leasing provided motive power.

Many ICE trains arrived and departed while I was waiting for my train to leave.

My home for that night was a Couchette car, ...

The interior of the couchette compartment, with the beds folded up to the day-time configuration.

A litte bit of youth hostel appeal, but it was sufficient for one night.

And off we went.

The next morning after the 900 km ride to Lörrach, a town in the tri-border area, where France, Germany and Switzerland meet.
IMG_0453.JPG
The loco pushed the four auto racks into a siding before placing the four passenger cars - three couchettes and one sleeper - in another parallel siding.
IMG_0477.JPG
Then the loco picked up the ancient movable ramp inherited from Deutsche Bahn (This mototrain is run by a small competitor). Note the lady throwing the switch by hand.
IMG_0466.JPG
Once the wheeled ramp was in place, ...

... the unloading could begin.
