Good morning everyone,
I've found on ebay the locos mentioned in the subject. One is a 3021 and the other is the 3482

I'm unsure which to get. They have both to be converted to digital anyway. I had a 3021 as one of my first Marklin locos so my heart beats in this direction but looking closely at both it looks like the 3482 is a much more refined and better tooled model than the 3021. Who has the 3482 on their layout that can tell me a bit more about it?
Thank you
Marco

I have both, in my case a 3021 and a 3682. I have to say the 3482/3682 is a much better model than the ancient 3021 tooling, with proper clear windows, visible cabs, detailed bogies and more correct proportions.

The 3482 will have a DCM motor. The 3021 will more likely have a LFCM motor. With DCM motors you have the option of using the 60760 decoder and motor kit which is excellent value!

Ray thank you for the photos, indeed the 3482 is a much better looking loco, and modern too :-)

Does the decoder in the 60760 allow to play with acceleration, deceleration and maximum speed settings or not ? I have the feeling that Marklin's decoders are very poor in this, but I may be wrong.

The decoder in this set is not the most advanced, but some adjustments are possible, as you can see in this table:

You can see the whole manual here:

Hi Ray,
thank you for the manual page of the decoder. Once I changed the motor components I can use any other decoder be it Marklin or other brand I believe.
Is there a new Marklin decoder that is better than this or not ?

Yes, recently I've been using the 60972 or 60982 mLD3 decoder. Very good performance and you get mfx auto-registration.

I sometimes use ESU Lokpilot decoders, but for standard Marklin 5 pole DCM motors the Marklin decoders require much fewer adjustments of cv's.

I have bought the 3482 on ebay and the conversion kit 60760 from a shop in Germany.
Can't wait for the two items to arrive :-)
Thank you and will keep you posted

The 3482 has an electronic reverse PCB which needs to be removed for the conversion. This board also provided the supply for the directional lights, at a lower voltage than is normal. If you leave the original bulbs in they will blow with the higher voltage supply from the decoder. You will need to replace them with standard bulbs for digital use (22V). The part number for these is E610080.

the loco has arrived!!
Nice model, very well made, all metal and heavy, like the old Marklin models BigGrin
The body work is perfect too !!

I have done a bit of a run in forward and backward.

The lights work nicely but in analog, or analogue, the red lights light up as well, or at least they can be seen through the transparencies.

Had to add a bit of oil on the wheel axels. Could not access the axels of the rotor as there is a metal U shaped thing that embraces the motor itself horizontally so I'll have to wait until I convert it to digital to oil the rotor axel.

The funny thing is that the engine smells of moth balls, really weird BigGrin

I'm now waiting for the postman to deliver the 60790 kit and the digital light bulbs.

Thank you for your support and suggestions !!

I'll let you know how the retrofitting goes.

Marco

Good morning,
so the 60760 kit has arrived.
There is a new 'motorschild', should I repllace the existing one? The one on the engine looks and runs ok.

In the attached picture there is a brown 'disc', do I have to remove it or not? I don't recall how I did these things years ago.

The close up of the new 'motorschild' doesn't show a neat piece of craftamnship though Bored

Thank you

If your picture shows the brush plate from the 60760 kit then you will see if you look closely that its dimensions are slightly different from the original one in the 3 pole motor. This is because the permanent magnet is slightly wider than the AC field coil. Use the item in the kit as per the instructions.

The "disc" is a suppression capacitor and should be kept in circuit.

It is the pic of the brush plate from the 60760 kit. I will take a closer look when I remove the other one. Thank you for pointing out this thing.
I will keep the capacitor too then BigGrin
Thank you for your help
