Hi,

"Märklin Moderne" is the title of an exhibition held at the DAM - Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German architecture museum) at Frankfurt until September 2018: http://dam-online.de/por...d1176-details1/1843.aspx

The title is misleading, it is an exhibition of the architecture of mainly FALLER - buildings in model and reality. And their influence to modern architecture.

Accompanying to the exhibition a nice catalogue is published:
http://dam-online.de/por...d1182-details1/1853.aspx

The catalogue is in German and in English.

Some sample pictures from the catalogue:

Hi Dale,

Everybody knows Märklin in Germany. And the brand is a kind of synonym for all model-trains. I have already seen advertisements for a "Märklin-layout made by Fleischmann" for sale. So a Märklin-world is build with Faller products.
But you are I right. I also wondered about the title chosen.

Regards

Markus

So "Märklin" in the title is more a synonym for "model railroad" or "scale model world". Like in the US "Xerox" is a synonym for "photocopy", "Kleenex" is a synonym for "tissue", and in the UK where "Biro" is a synonym for "ball point pen".

The word Marklin on the cover seems to have the typical Marklin lettertype,a hint of cooperation?

Hi,

From the foreword:

Quote:
...We only borrowed the name Märklin, as it is not about the "rolling stock". However, for a long time Märklin has been a synonym for the model railway in general. ..."

Märklin appears only in the title and in the acknowledgements.

Markus

That is not the lettertype of Märklin. Similar but definitely not the same.

Lol, yes the generic brand-name adoption has crept in over the years.

And this might not always be such a bad thing (to have all model railways referred to as "Märklin") -ie raising of brand-awareness, but I can sure see some confusion, and definitely disappointment when someone says "You wanna come see my Märklin trains?", you get there only to find it's some 'other' (ugh) brand altogether.

At least if it was German or European I might forgive them but I have heard even of confusion over Märklin or Bachmann being mis-heard and swapped but I will also accept this would mostly be outside of Europe where we tend to say "Mark-lin", rather than more correctly Maerkleen (as it sounds to me - longer than one e, but shorter than 2)

I see they listed "Scotch Tape", but here we'd be more inclined to say Sellotape - it's still a brand but it's what we'd usually ask someone for.

"Wite out" - here we'd probably say "Twink", but reading that raised some flags. I'd always been told that the original concept was invent by the Mother of ex-Monkee Mike Nesmith in 1956 eventually becoming Liquid Paper, well before 'Wite-Out', Tipp-Ex etc. Even Wikipedia has conflicting accounts (not that I treat everything there as Gospel but it's a good starting point)

Dumpster? = Wheelie Bin here.

Plexiglas = Perspex

'Google' something, oh yes. I will NEVER 'Bing' something. stupid word, useless search engine. And it brings disrepute to a great product Gebrüder Bing

Now, need to get back to my Märklin. Oh, it actually IS Märklin LOL LOL LOL

Then there is the regional cultural problem.
In the southern United States all carbonated sodas are "Coke".

As in "you want a Coke?"

"Yes"

"What kind?"

"Sprite"

My model world is Marklin and Faller so if they combine that would be a plus. Joint advertising could be useful for both.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

For that thread you do, but there is lots of interesting stuff there. If you register and browse the site using Chrome you have the option of automatic translations which makes it quite readable.
