One thing that struck me immediately, the way in which the castle ruin seems to 'grow' out of the hill. So lifelike. |

Hi Ken
This is a great layout, very well decorated in the flavour between 1950 and 1955. The "suitcase"layout is fun. All this reminds me of my Marklin layout in my dad's cellar. The decoration was poor but it was automated with 100 IBM relays for various automations, block system and interloop train exchanges. There was also a Faller AMS circuit. Sadly no pictures. Thanks Ken for sharing with us.

Love that solid third rail track too! It's always great to see vintage pieces still running well after all these years. Even with proper maintenance, could the same hold true for today's high-tech offerings?

It must have been built right at the changeover point from solid centre rail to centre studs, as there is some stud track on it. You do need to look to find it, but it is there.

What a trip down memory lane. What a great analog layout! Practical and transportable. I am also a "military brat" who got my start with Marklin while my father was stationed in Germany. We were stationed right up the autobahn at Rhein-Main AFB. My German uncle would purchase a locomotive and rolling stock as a Christmas gift. I remember seeing similar layouts in store windows around Christmas. It was my habit to stand there as long as I could; no matter how cold it was .They were truly every child's dream. I appreciate you sharing the dream layout of my childhood. Brought back great memories.

Some serious errors in the narration....
"SK800 was based on the Class 50 which was a passenger locomotive..." (14:05)
He then goes on to introduce a Class 50 which is actually a 3047 BR44......
Oh dear!
Great layout though with lots of classic Marklin trains.
