I buy Viessmann turnout decoders (and some other Viessmann electrics/electronics) because they are usually about a third less expensive than the equivalent Maerklin M83 and work just as well. I am at present looking at S88 feedback modules and their equivalents and was surprised to find that the Viessmann S88 equivalent is about 50% more expensive than the Maerklin product.
Is this just due to the vagaries of product pricing or is there some difference in the product?

It would be best to confirm what items numbers you are comparing specifically.

There are a few different types of S88 detection but regardless they are all just detecting occupation. The bigger benefit is the connector/cable type - whether they are S88-N
S88-N refers to them having an RJ45 connector for connecting the bus with cat5 cable, rather than the flat ribbon cables which are prone to interference.
I had a large number to buy so went with the Tams S88-3 as you can also buy them in kit form (cheaper again) and they were S88-N standard.

I was actually comparing the MARK 60881 and the VIESS 5217. But I get your point. Thanks

The Märklin 60881 uses the S88N (cat5) bus wiring, and the Viessmann 5217 looks like it uses the flat ribbon cable type bus, so that and related supply/demand likely play into it.

Thanks for the item numbers. I can see your point and it is baffling - all I can say is hooray for Marklin, their product in this case is a far better buy!
I cannot determine why Viessmann would be charging that amount compared to the Marklin and as you say, quite unlike them.

As a comparison the S88-3 is nearly half the price of the marklin unit again, though as a kit - assembled with a case it is the same price as Marklin.
