"Es handelte sich um einen EuroCity mit Kurs von Graz nach Saarbrücken und einen Personen-Nahverkehrszug, vermutlich eine S-Bahn"

Its a crash of a EC216 en route from Graz, Austria to Saarbrücken, Germany and a local train from Friesach (Kärnten) to Mürzzuschlag.

Trains were heading in opposite directions and collided near a turnout - so someone didn't follow instructions/signals or switched the turnout wrong, I suspect.

Ouch, that would not be a good feeling having your window peeled away from beside you.

These carriages when exposed look like they've made them out of cardboard, there doesn't seem to be any protection for passengers when an accident like this happens., the may look comfortable inside but people will ask the question about safety issues.

Looks like the fire brigade from Leopen-Göss hasn't got a stepladder, it could be an extract from the comedy "The plank"

Just like airplanes, and cars as well as trucks, the body shells are there to keep the atmosphere outside, seal in the inside and reduce drag and weight. They are not designed as roll cages or armored against such impacts. Ever seen trucks hit bridges that are too low for them.. similar effects.

It may be the case in most transport vehicles but you don't have 30 or 40 people sitting at the window (except buses) = (drivers seat) and the picture shows clearly there is absolutely no protection what soever.
