Marklin transformers: 278A (16 VA) vs. 280A (30 VA)

In one of my recent Ebay purchases, I ended up with a Marklin 278A transformer and a 1956 Marklin catalog. According to the catalog, the 278A puts out 16 VA. However, according to the catalog, it is preferable to have a 280A transformer for a large layout with multiple locomotives, as the 280A puts out 30 VA. Are either of these transformers still effective in today's higher tech model railroading environment? Thanks.

I was about to reply when I saw Steve's reply. The power ratings aren't the issue as it is the insulation breaking down due to age. Not something to muck around with as you may not get to enjoy your purchase.

All my Blue transformers have been checked out and had new power leads fitted. The problem with the smaller transformer is it wont easily reverse some of the bigger locos [ that's what I found ]. Its very good with the small shunters and so very effective in a shunting yard. Dereck |
