i saw a video as the link I wondered why VSOE (Venice - Simplon Orient Express) couldn't directly drive into Channel Tunnel but transited by bus packed into cargo train in Calais and transferred by Pullman Train in England ? I also saw the movie " murder on Orient Express ". Apparently, the train in the movie was different from the present. At least, i couldn't see the open platform for scenery viewing at the rear end of coach from above video. Edited by user 25 December 2017 00:52:35(UTC)

The VSOE train does not comply with the safety standards for the Chunnel.
Mainly lack of centralized locking of the doors, and overriding of the emergency brakes.
When the train visited Sweden, it ran empty from Copenhagen to Malmoe where the pasdengers reentered the train.
The train in the film is propably a mix of the real stuff, and props built for the train.
PS I drove the train in Sweden from Gothenburg to Hallsberg, 16 Coaches, was not different from normal nighttrains, but from Hallsberg to Stockholm I had my own compartment, that was very Nice.

Am I right in remembering the 'boat train' coaches on the ferry as late as the 1960's?
What I do remember clearly was a train that left London at 10.30am sharp, disembarked at Dover and onto ferry, straight off ferry at Calais onto two FS coaches, a long day followed, going in different directions, chopping and changing, via Metz, Alps at night, and waking up in Milan.
Also...on another occasion...going down to Bologna, front observation car on Settebello, smoky with sun streaming in, Elizabeth Taylor surrounded by big suited men, me and my inquisitive school mate were ushered out...
Ah well...

Hi, first of, the Calais to Venice VSOE is built to European loading gauge and has been said is not got all that it must have to run through the channel tunnel?, but it did visit empty on the 2 November to St Pancras London. It was pulled there by two Eurotunnel locomotives Mak diesels, ex NS 6400 which Marklin have made? There is no such thing as a balcony coach on wagon lits coaches?? It’s Hollywood crap along with the trestle bridge?? |

Looks like nothing has changed on the VSOE since 2011 when we did the trip for our anniversary, except we did not "Go Dutch" on Champagne and wine and had (way!) more than when it was just rosé and free on the Pullman train between Folkestone and Victoria Station. For those who know (or want to know) the (good) places , we spent 3 nights at the Cipriani Hotel in Venice before the trip and two nights at the Goring in London, at the end before flying home. It's very nice to be able to say that you have been the Driver for a countries Premier Train , Definitely a feather in your hat to proudly show off . I had the pleasure to say that I was the driver many times on Australia's premier train the "Indian Pacific " but only from Sydney to Parkes which is the middle of New South Wales .
