These two locos seem identical - are they? If so, than the set at Mikes's for $213.00 with taxes (142 Euros) is an excellent deal since the loco alone sells for 140 Euros. Too good to be true? See links below. Mike's set The loco alone |

Small correction to my math  The starter set costs at Mike's $226.00 with taxes ($199.95 plus 13% HST) or 150 Euros. So, for 10 Euros more, you get all the rest.  |

Been looking to buy the locomotive but seeing that you can buy the set for slightly more, makes perfect sense. I need a lot more C tracks anyway.

It looks like the starter set uses the older Relex type couples, but they seem to be in the NEM pockets. You can buy the conversion couplers (article 7203) but they are 50 euro for 50 pieces. Maybe Mike at Westendtrains has some loose couplers or will break up a package if you need them to couple your existing rolling stock. In that case the starter set would be a better buy.

EUR17 to ship to Denmark So received the set today (29166)and the Locomotive has a Plastic Body, thought they came with Metal. No big deal but would have been nice with all Metal Body. Still a very good deal with the extra tracks you get instead of buying just the Locomotive Separately (36740)

I have this loco 36243 - but do not recommend it. Mine needed a new motor after a few months and I had hardly used it. Good thing Mike here replaced the motor under warranty at no charge. I read somewhere that this motor failure is not uncommon with this loco. Perhaps that is why Marklin no longer makes it. In addition, the loco is VERY slow. A delight perhaps for those who like slow-running locos, but a disappointment for me. However, the SOUNDS are a real delight. That is why I still have it. Sometimes I play the sounds while an analogue Roco steamer goes by.  Marklin does make a new similar model, perhaps to replace this one, but do not know the article no. Steam loco - low price - low quality? |

Steam loco - low price - low quality? Quite happy with my 36740 Loco and HO's kind suggestion that I go for the all Metal 36243, I will pass on. The 36740 is no speed demon either, it takes the top spot as the slowest locomotive I have.

Steam loco - low price - low quality? There have been two issued this year, 36245 and 36246. One is a special release (can't remember the reason why, but I think it was also weathered). These locos were probably quite slow in the prototype, as they were designed as a branch line loco that would have done commuter and mixed traffic. I'll try and dig out the book I have on these and check the prototype top speed.

I have the 36741 which it the KPEV version of the 36740. It is a great little loco which runs very well. I was looking to buy the 36740 or the equivalent from the starter set to go with my era III trains.
I also have the 36243 Br24 and find it excellent. It's such a lot smoother than my old 3003, even when I fitted it with a 60943 5 pole motor and 60972 decoder. I can't say I've had any problem with the motor, but perhaps it could fail if driven constantly at maximum speed? |

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

Leaving aside that I did not run it all that much, THAT is a good question that I will throw back at everyone: Is it safe to run a slow locomotive at top speed for any length of time? Someone told me "no", but sometimes I ask myself the same question. So as to put it in perspective, I doubt that loco had more than an average of 30 minutes at a time when I used it, which has not been often. Mainly because I can't stand watching it go soooo slooowly. On one occasion it ran for perhaps one hour straight at the Dutch Retirement home we visited a couple of years ago or so. |
