I am in Stockholm for a week and was wondering if there were any model train shops worth visiting? Thanks, Chris

You can search at google by writing "hobbyaffärer i Stockholm".
But make sure to write in swedish language.

I live in the Stockholm area and my comments to the list are:

Harambee hobby is going out of business.

NK is a department store and it was years ago that they had decent selection of Märklin.

Material AB Jan Wirström - I've never heard of. Some business information sites indicate the company as "mail order and Internet shop".

I would instead suggest:

In central Stockholm:

Eskader Modeller
Grevgatan 69
114 59 STOCKHOLM
www.eskader.se
Nearest Underground station is Karlaplan on the red line in direction Ropsten. Second stop from T-Centralen (at Stockholm Central station). Two minutes walk from the Underground station.

In the suburbs:

TrainShop
Stationsvägen 29
14140 HUDDINGE
http://www.trainshop.se/n/
Nearest Public transportation Local train Stuvsta Station. About 13 minutes from Stockholm Central station in direction Södertälje. About 250 metres walk from the Stuvsta Station (past the ICA food store).
NB The shop is closed for vacation from 15h00 today and opens again on July 30th at 12h00.

MJ-Hobbyexperten
Västbergavägen 24,
126 30 HÄGERSTEN
http://www.mjhobby.se/
Nearest Underground station is Telefonplan on the red line in direction Fruängen. About 13 minutes by underground from T-Centralen. It is close to 1 km to walk from the Underground station, turn left when leaving the Underground station and at about half-way there is a roundabout, continue straight (under the motorway) and you are on Västbergavägen).

In my mind, Eskader and TrainShop are the best stocked Märklin shops in the Stockholm area. Eskader is normally more expensive, but I guess that is the price you have to pay when shopping in a city centre shop.

Not surprised at this one.. Only place in Sweden where we found less than happy people.

After walking through the snow from the Sheraton our reception upon entering the store was disappointing.. I had money to spend too.

I agree and that's why I had put it in the following way - perhaps too subtly phrased:

"In my mind, Eskader and TrainShop are the best stocked Märklin shops in the Stockholm area. Eskader is normally more expensive, but I guess that is the price you have to pay when shopping in a city centre shop."

Western Pacific, thank you for the first hand and very complete information. It was exactly what I was hoping for. Are there any non-Marklin train shops that are worth visiting? BTW: I am staying at my sister-in-law's place in Stockholm City Center. Chris

Cris - did you change user id?

Back to the question:

Eskader has very little, if anything else than Märklin. They have other hobby stuff, for instance for building ship models.

TrainShop has recently also became Roco dealer and they have some of the more recent Roco models of Swedish prototypes in stock. If you are into Nohabs and you are still in town on July 30th, when they re-open, then they have the Märklin 37679 "Structon" as well as some Danish DSB and Nordjyske Baner's Nohabs.

MJ-Hobbyexperten has got Roco, NMJ, Heljan to name a few brands and of course their own brand Jeco, which is a line of primarily engine models of Swedish engines. These engines are normally produced in relatively short series and the ratio between 2R and 3R is 70 to 30 % if I've understood it correct. This means that they often sell out their 3R models relatively fast. A quick check on their Internet site tells me that they have Jeco's SJ X2000 as well as SJ Rc2 and Rc3 in stock. Also for other brands the volumes they have in stock are limited, but better than what they stock of Märklin.

I could add that all these shops accept credit cards (MasterCard and Visa; only Eskader accepts American Express as well, but perhaps that has to do with their location in one of the more posh parts of Stockholm called Östermalm).

I made it to Eskader. (Thanks Western Pacific.) It is by far one of the best stocked Marklin shops I have ever visited. I must have spent two hours there checking out old and new Marklin. Found a starter set that I had been looking for quite a while. My plan is to have it shipped back to the U.S. Even with shipping, the price was fair. Chris

Harambee are Closed, NK have no Märklin anymore, Not sure about Wirström.

The other shops still open, Recommend "Eskader"

If you care for a Pint or a Cup of tea after shopping, contact me, I live a short walk from Eskader!
