A man has been flown to hospital with minor injuries while a woman is suffering from shock after their car was hit by a steam train near Goolwa, South Australia. See here for more information.

The loco in the picture is a South Australian Railways 620 class no. 621, outshopped from Islington Workshops on September 7, 1936.

Well, 4WD vehicles are invincible, didn't you know? ... Laugh Laugh Laugh

Sounds rather like a case of complacency - 'trains never come through here so I don't need to look, what the heck is that noise ???' ... Laugh Laugh

But you have to wonder why they went to the expense of a helicopter ride to hospital for 'minor injuries' ... Confused

More than likely the train people radioed the Emergency Services, when the accident happened. If the ambulance is too far away, they will always send a chopper.. If there is a possibility of severe injuries (a usual thing when a train hits a car), they will send a chopper to airlift the people to the nearest large hospital, which I guess is Adelaide (around 90km away).. I doubt that the town of Goolwa has a hospital and if it does, then it is unlikely to have the capacity to handle serious injuries.. Australia is not like the UK..

More than likely, the old fool probably thought he could beat the train to the crossing. It was a tie! Cursing
