I suspect the answer is "no", unless the locomotives "assigned" to each IR controller are of different types. But I have to ask anyway, in order to find the most economical way of having two grandsons sharing the same track but each controlling his locomotive(s), irrespective of type. Suggestions as to how best to achieve that objective will be gratefully welcome.

The answer is "Yes".
It'll be less confusing if both controllers are set to individual (different) addresses.
