That pretty much busts the myth that a penny on a track will derail a train.. LOL

In one of the final scenes from the 1964 film "The Train" starring Burt Lancaster he just unbolted the rail bolts along a

circa 10 meter section of track. When the Lok hit the section it just blew out each rail to the sides and derailed. Plastic

explosive was used in other scenes in the film. Peter. Cool

A very good demonstration of a horrible way to run an experiment.

First, by the loco not being under power, the effects of its traction on the rails isn't being tested, so what you are testing is only will heavy cars derail.

Second, in one of the clips once the big section was removed from over the sleeper, the rail is seen sliding forward... that would cause a rail deformation somewhere up the track where the chance of derailment increases a bit.

The film is a good demo on how not to derail a train, which I suspect was the point... proving why some of the ideas are not effective.

Blowing a cut in a rail AND blowing some sleepers apart to get that rail to move outward an inch or two would have been fine.

Yeah, any saboteur worth their salt would have positioned the removed piece of track so it guided the wheel flanges outside the rail.
