Hi,

I'm really interested in one of Marklin's Re 4/4 II locomotives, particularly the 37359 and the 37348. Could someone tell me the main differences between these two locos? I really like the red color Love but most of my collection so far is in German era III. Would the sound decoders be identical between the two models? I'm new to the Swiss models so I'm not sure if the Re 4/4 II pulled passenger coaches or freight. Could you point me to a prototypical Marklin coach or cargo set that each locomotive might pull?

Thank you,
David

Both the green and the red Re 4/4 II pulled (and still do so) almost every kind of train. Their green livery has continuously been replaced by red in the last 30 years, and only one or two units now still exist in green. But if you are not a true "nit picker", you can attach nearly everything to such a loco, except vintage era I to III stuff.

Great! Thank you for the information, Unholz! I am not much of a nit picker at this point. I am still only running on an oval of track on our kitchen table :) My girlfriend always tells me I need to find another place to set up my trains. My plan is to build a small train table next to her Steinway in the piano room :)

Regards,
David

Don't worry about the small table I reckon the top of a Steinway concert grand would be the perfect shape for a model railway - as long as she doesn't want the top tilted up and you promise not to screw down the track1

LOL

It's a parlor grand so maybe not quite the size of the concert grand but I think I could fit a z-scale layout on top. We don't leave the top open too much because our cats like to get in there and watch the hammers strike the strings when she's playing Laugh .

David,

The 37359 is a model of a green Re 4/4II in the mid 1980s. The 37348 is a model of a red Re 4/4II with partial update for the LION program. Several loks existed in this state for a period around 2012-2014. As most of your collection is Era III, perhaps the 1980s green model might be more suitable, as it could probably pass with a early 1970s consist of DB or SBB coaches.

If the sound feature is not important, you can look for the 26534 Set from a few years back which included a green Re 4/4II and several lightsteel coaches.
For a similar consist with the 37359, you could look for the 43361, 43371, 43381, 43391 and 43401 lightsteel coaches
If you want a 1980s Intercity or Eurocity, you could go with the 1/100 EWIV coaches (42159/42160) or the 28cm (1/93.5) Eurofima type coaches. The 43340 SBB first class coach goes nicely with the 42910 and 42920 FS coaches in similar livery, which could be found on trains from Stuttgart to Italy through Switzerland.

Another option would be the 37349 Re 4/4II red/beige with the 43854 TEE Helvetia Set, which was a classic look on Swiss rails from 1969 to 1979.

Regards

Hi Mike

Thanks for the great info! Another option for me is purchasing the 26604 set (TEE Rheingold) which may satisfy me in terms of the green loco, though it is an Re 4/4 I. I'll have to think about it a bit more. For me, especially for my next purchase, the sound feature is very important because I do not have any electric locos with sound. Though the 26534 set you suggested does look nice. Would you expect all of these Re 4/4 II and even the Re 4/4 I locos to have the same sound decoder? Or more specifically the same "electric locomotive operating sound"?

Thank you again and kind regards,
David
