Factory is going all out to celebrate 60 years of TEE service.

VT 11.5 TEE Diesel Powered Rail Car Train – Gold-Plated Special Edition

Dear Madam/Sir:
Sixty years ago a new era began in European train service. On June 2, 1957, the first TEE trains entered
service. During all of 2017, we would like to commemorate this groundbreaking venture by offering a series of
beautifully crafted models for anniversary of the TEE.

The VT 11.5 as a 7-part train set is plated in 24-karat fine gold, making it a truly unique model. It is equipped
with an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound functions. It is being delivered in exclusive packaging with a
certificate of authenticity. The powered rail car train and the certificate of authenticity will be consecutively
numbered. These powered rail car trains are limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide.

That is an absurdity, the price I mean.

By the time you get it home, it would cost CAD$3,600.00. Scared Woot OhMyGod ThumbDown LOL

Seriously, if one is crazy enough to pay the price, Mike here could probably save you a few hundred dollars.

I think that the gold color with the TEE livery is absolutely stunning!Drool

My question is, how much handling would it take if one chose to run it? If I buy it I would run it. I run all my trains, no matter how rare.

A pair of silk gloves would do IMHO. (Same as with the silver HAG Re 460 from 1997)

But it isn't so much the *handling* that I would worry...remembering how the modules' * operation* sometimes runs amok BigGrin BigGrin

I do not know how the price developped over the years, but it's an investment I think.

The price of platinum in 2000 was around USD 600 per oz. Now it's around USD 1,000 per oz..

In order for this to be an investment the weight of the Lok would have had to been around 50 oz +- as the retail cost was around USD 30,000. 50oz is around 1.56 lbs of platinum. Of course we could subtract some for the value of the gems etc. Given retail markups it's probably safe to say that there was much less than 1.56lbs of platinum in the Lok, and I would assume that the chassis and the innards were regular production stuff. The alloy for the shell likely has around 16oz of platinum max. That would be a platinum value of USD 9,600 in 2000. That's worth USD $16,000 today. So not a good investment.

HOWEVER the platinum price hit around USD 2,000 around 2010. That would put the metal value at USD 32,000. So there is hope!

Gold plating is not solid gold. And while expensive to produce, the TEE piece could in no way be considered an investment in precious metal. The potential investment would be in the brand and future desireability of the train in the collector market. And we know how that goes.Blushing

I'm inclined to buy the train, because the color goes well with the TEE motif. It's not an investment, but something I think I'll enjoy. Which is why we buy any of the beautiful trains we own.BigGrin

Its a highly desirable model so I would think yes, the value is probably correct. Personally, if I could, I wouldnt mind buying it as its probably one of the most valuable Märklin models ever made.

Coming back to this question......I am currently in Stockholm and I know someone here who actually owns one of the very few Millenium Crocs....and its for sale!

Some facts...Märklin keeps it a secret, but looks like there are between 32-40 Millenium Crocs made.

The Platinum on its own is worth around €20.000! There are lots of other precious metals used inside too.

Price? Only €55K Cool

There are about 475 grams of Pt 950 in such a loco.
The value I found today was $32.32 per gram. This gives about US$ 15,000 or € 14,000 just for the platinum.

Here I get €13,675.84

Perhaps the value was higher in the past?!

By the way, the exterior box....about 7-8 kgs!

Either way, Märklin probably made a nice profit....

Hello!

The millennium crokodil 32000 is in koll special 2015 edition 100 ?

There is a price of platinium. But it probably does not dictate the price of the locomotive ??

A 3756,39561 etc etc......cost about 200-400 Euro in Swedish tradera!!
(Swedish Ebay)
And a 3015 perhaps the double!!

Material to these probably cost about 1 Euro ??

Regards

Bertil.

My copy of Koll's catalogue gives the number as "100 ?".
The number "30-40" comes from the dealer who wants to sell one.
The offer was around for several months now. Not much demand at that price - at least that's a fact.

Those who pre-ordered the loco did not know the exact price because it depended on the value of platinum at a data in the future.

The value of the platinum varies somewhere between €10,000 and €20,000 and I can imagine that some folks will offer more money for the loco when the value of platinum is high.

How much will you get when you need the money and have to sell the loco in short time? I think this will depend on the value of platinum at that time.

The gold-plated VT is a completely different story. You just get a very thin layer of gold with that train.

Hi,

Following Alain Van Den Abeele: "Märklin : Miroir de son temps", 45 examples of 32000 were made. I think that book is a reliable source.

Hi all,

I don't see material for 100 EUR. You need less than 1 gram of gold for the hole train.
But that's really not what counts. A modern crocodile contains zinc for about 2.50 EUR, a tin-plate car contains steel for 0,05 EUR.
