Hi everyone,

As most of you know I make up my own Overhead system and as I go along I find better ways of constructing it.

All masts are fitted and secured, the support arm is placed into the right position and soldered.

At the moment I'm taking 3 x 500m wire bend the end up and solder them together creating 1.5m wire length.
at module separations I hook the wire into the loop of the support arm and than go to the next mast and solder the wire underneath the loop, keeping tension on it all the time, than the 2nd mast; for the third mast I'm getting close to edge of 2 modules and I secure the wire into the loop again.
Tomorrow I'll do the top wire and than the upright supports, to do this I again solder the wires together (top wire) at one end bend it to the right distance for the upright supports and than cut the upper support into the right length.

You can also see the assembly of cross spans and how they are constructed. one picture shows you the insulation of wires from neighbouring tracks

Update:

Today I have de-soldered the solder spots with Sommerfeldt solder oil so they don't look as bulky. more pictures tonight with the upper wire and the vertical wires added and soldered.

regards.,

John

Continuation:

one photo shows you can't cheat or take your eyes of the job (had to drill another hole)

using Sommerfeldts solder oil has helped a lot to keep the soldering spot to a minimum

Hi everyone,

The sommerfeldt stuff is certainly more elegant than the Marklin, I've just done a design for a small temporary layout just to run my loco's since they are all being
serviced progressively and will use Marklin for now

I will be using Sommerfeldt catenary on my layout and while reading through the manual one of my first questions has been 'is the oil really required?'

Thanks for posting this information because you've answered that question already:)

Interesting- I bought some of the oil but haven't experimented with it yet. How do you use it? If it helps make for small soldering patches that is a godsend...

Yes its a flux, so you apply it before soldering and it helps the solder to adhere quickly, meaning less contact time and smaller/smoother joints.

As a teenager, i started making my own masts and overhead wire because I could not understand how you held a piece of wire between two points and it curved round as with the marklin system. I used long lengths of copper wire and tensioned them to get the wire straight.. i did much the same as what you have done with the exception of making the wire sort of zig zag down the straight sections a bit like the real ones I had looked at in n, but using wooden masts. Unfortunately, i never had a permanent set up so it never really got finished. It did work though with my 1953 vintage RET800.
