This Z-scale plan could be used in H0 scale, too: One one side is a downtown passenger terminal - boasting a engine turntable and express freight tracks - with passenger station tracks disappearing under a large overall roof, and on the other side a rural mainline scene. Earlier today, I presented already the urban side of this janus-headed layout - without mentioning the other rural side - in the planning thread of forum member applor for illustrating a scenery idea. Twisted dogbone with stacked return loops; compared with posts 96 & 99 round trip run extended to +18 m. Keeping R1 curves in hidden return loops and increasing visible curves to R2 would result in a 185 x 185 cm square. Adding a station siding on the right side would add another 10 cm. Thus, still room for improvement, but now I am confident that this concept is doable on that surface. Btw: Compared with the "Wottah Horseshoe" concept presented in post no. 73, the main line trough the scenery portion is more prominent. :o) Here the artist´s perception: The crossover in front of the upper return loop tunnel portal allows a fast train uphill running on the "left" track to pass a slow uphill train on the "right" track and change over to the right track after the manouever (before becoming a downhill train meeting the still struggling slow uphill train). The rollercoaster impression could be avoided by converting the continuous loop to a dogbone design. Like that the size grows to 142 x 200 cm. Then, stacking the return loops frees space for a station area.

(2) Proud owner of German class 85 steamer or class 44 electric whose stomping grounds were the Black Forest Hoellentalbahn and no space to recreate a plausible layout setting? Having 2 x 2 m space (equalling a the size of a double bed) but no clue what to do with it? Here comes a proposal, which could serve for either purpose. Minimum, radius in visible areas is R2. Easements everywhere. The return loops accommodate a 3 m long train, respectively. The three valley station tracks measure 160 to 185 cm in length. For both, return loops and station arrangement, there is still room for maneuver within the 2 x 2 m limit.

Initially, I envisaged using a double-sided backdrop to separate mountain and station areas, but I believe - due to the difference in altitude - that it could be socially acceptable to do without. EDIT: When the central divider is actually left away, Portuguese Creek should be placed in between the station area and the main line where the ramp is gaining altitude from 2 to 6 cm in order to add plausibility. The planner intends to run era V trains. The main line is a dogbone circuit. The double track main line on the landscape side descends, dives under both the camouflaged main station loop and the branch line station level on top of the latter and ends in a return loop stacked under the cityscape level. A hanging valley squeezed into the open space between the hidden main line dog bone end loops offers great landscaping potential. The inner two main station sidings are through tracks, actually a double track balloon, a design which allows two mainline trains to meet and/or pass each other. The outer two spurs of the main station are stub tracks. The generous station throat trackage creates a big city station impression. Branch line passenger trains stop at a platform outside the large overall roof. Sometimes a prototypical situation in cluttered downtowns. Six trains can be operated simultaneously. N scale dimensions = 65x100 cm. On the second drawing the concept is further condensed, and an industrial spur - a shunter could shuttle on it back and forth - is bridging the mainlines. The upper loops are for suburban trains, and the lower loops for long distance trains. N scale dimensions = 62x86 cm.

Assuming that the grid dimensions are 50 cm per box for H0 scale, this translates to 240 x 155 cm. Iteration no. 1 by a German N scaler Iteration no. 2 by the same German N scaler It turned out that condensing the initial design in terms of length is easier than in terms of depth due to the helix space requirement. Translated into Maerklin C track. While always intrigued by the visible areas, I am not a fan of the elaborate shadow stations. Trying to understand the mainline run, I came up with a schematic: Even more simplified to make a simple man like myself grasp it: Considering positions of terminal, passing sidings and turntable, I ignored industry spurs for the sake of clarity. I am not sure about the green dotted line: There is a turnout on the lower level on the upper right hand layout leg leading the track into a tunnel, but I can only guess where the track is going to.

More trivia: - Elevations range from 0 cm (lower station with passing track on lower right hand corner) to 38 cm (long straight bridges of the high line). which ensures the whimsical effects I admire so much. - Even parallel mainline tracks are separated by being placed at various heights, thus avoiding a crowded impression. - Although this is a H0n3 gauge design, radii are equivalent of Maerklin R4 (minimum) and R5 (maximum) curves, ensuring elegant train movements.

A shelf with terminal tracks connected via a wye to the mainline at a height of 15 cm could be added in an elegant way. Hooking up to "level 0" could be useful for creating further layover tracks below the wye-connected terminal (this requires a "diving" by 2 cm to make it with enough clearance under the "inverted reverse loop ramp"). Terminal track length depends on personal taste and space.

There is a lot of room for improvement, as squeezing in more track, having a more elegant station throat, incorporating easements, lengthening track lengths for accommodating long U.S. style trains as well as improving the appearance of the gorge. Still, given that this is the equivalent of the surface of our dinner table, I am quite impressed to learn what is possible.

Gorge width between tracks = 20 cm (of which river width = 10 cm), which is good enough as my Blue River RR layout demonstrated. Mountain division roundtrip like that, i.e. ignoring future station trackage = 24 m (River division = 5 m).
