Hello all,

I am just starting out with model railways and trying to learn everything. My weakest topic is definitely wiring and power supplies. I started out with the 29351 starter kit and now I am building a proper layout. I have installed four point motors and linked them to a 72751 control box but I'm struggling with a very basic question, how do I power them?? I understand I need a 16V supply from a transformer but what transformer should I buy? Does anyone have a simple link?

Thanks for your help.

Ben

Hi Ben,

The 72751 control box is designed to work with the base station included in Starter sets with the IR remote controller. Your set has the MS2 controller and track box and does not have the 4 way socket for connecting to the 72751 box.

You should use the 72720 box to switch the turnout motors on your set-up. This box has the individual type of sockets for the two blue cables from the turnout motor. The yellow should be connected to the track "Live" and there should be another connection from the 72720 ground connection to track ground.

Apologies, I did mean 72720 not 72751, thanks for pointing that out.

So, I have the two blue cables which go to 72720. Then the yellow cable from the point motor and the cable that comes from the side of the 72720 (in the instruction manual, this is brown). These two (yellow and brown) should simply connect back to the track? No further transformer or separate power supply is required?

That will work as long as there is power on the track. If you press the "stop" button you won't be able to switch your turnouts. If you want to power the turnout motors independently then you can use an accessory transformer (or switched mode power supply) on the yellow and brown cables instead.

I use my old 6001 transformer for this purpose, but you can use a new power supply like the 60061 instead (You'll also need the 60200 adaptor to break out the cable into the yellow and brown.

Have a look at the manual for one of these:

Great, thank you. If I wanted to buy a transformer what would you recommend?

Thanks for your patience in explaining these absolute basics!
