How do you identify older model numbers not in current catalog?

Many if not most of the locos featured in 'show us your locomotive purchases' are older models that do not appear in current mnfr catalogues. If you tap the model number into the Maerklin product database you are just told that it is not made any longer, end of story. Is there any database or list which identifies the specific loco that these earlier model numbers referred to, their original specs, etc. Or do you just have to know from experience, or from vendor listings, that a MAR xxxxx was a KPEV tender steamer with digital control that came out in 2001 and has since been discontinued? |

Whenever someone mentions the number of a Marklin item, I get curious and google say Marklin DA800. You try it. Gives you pictures sometimes and those being sold on the internet,.

Another place you can find product numbers on is a free website is from Helmut Kern: http://www.hfkern.gmxhome.de/The locos are sorted by class (e.g. BR89) there, but in the Kolls book they are sorted by product number (e.g. 3000). |

Dear Jabez Of course Koll's is the best sourse You can find all the Marklin Catalogs in http://lnx.3rotaie.it/wp/ for free download most in the English version I think that most of the time are more usufful than the German text Koll's, with pictures of all the items. If you are looking for more details Koll's is the source. There there is a Koll's 2002 edition as well for download which cover all the classic era Costas

If you do download them, please respect the spirit in which they were provided as a free resource for Marklin enthusiasts, and do not sell them for profit (as has previously happened). Marklin catalogs up to 2000 can be downloaded from the following site without having to sign up (you do need to sign up to get access to the Italian Marklinfan site) - http://www.lctm.info/Biblioteca/Catalogos/Marklin/

Of course I believe that the real Marklin enthusiasts are not doing any profit from our hobby but spent some thousands every year!!! Any way thank you again so much.... Costas

It would be nice if Märklin built up its full product database so that for every part number there was an entry having at least a short sentence or two description of what it was, what the prototype was and when it was sold (over what years); add a photo when possible. Even better, linking to other variants of the same prototype in other part numbers. It doesn't take a lot and they certainly could slowly build this up over time. |

Jabez Just to clarify, the Kolls catalogs are issued annually. What I like is the schedules at the front which show all the models issued in each of the major model families, i.e. all the BR 96 models grouped together for easy reference, analog, delta, digital, mfx, and colour and year of manufacture. Very useful if you want to see what is available or compare models. BR |
