I must say I am very partial to this layout, long runs and continuous operation with grades and a nice theme.

Maybe next time BigGrin

Here the 160 x 160 cm coffee table adaptation. Again a feasibility study which needed fine-tuning before going live.

Could the basic concept be condensed - with a decent main line run, say 10 m round trip? Yes, on 142 x 130 cm.

For operating, the layout needs access from at least two sides (for maintenance from three). A double-faced central backdrop creates a diorama feeling and makes the mainline scenery appear longer than it actually is. The river serves as scenic divider visually separating the tracks on the different river banks. Meant for continuous running on a two track mainline with the odd station stops, meets and passes plus limited switching and shunting. Dimensions: ca. 190 x 250 cm, i.e. roughly the size of a large bed. The radius of curves around the castle rock - viewed from outside - is wider, while the radius of the curves in the bridge areas - viewed from inside - is tighter. All switches/turnouts/points are easy to reach. The station stubs could serve a small river port; ships sailing upstream pass under the taller bridge while the lower bridge next to the quay hinders them to continue their journey, leading to an exchange of goods between water and rail transport.

Well if I ever build a Pennsylvania layout for my brass and Trix 2 rail stuff, this will be it.

Beauty.
Thanks Ak and Brandon.

Hi Brandon,
That is a splendid single track version of the aforementioned layout.
Plenty of shunting facilities there if I may say. With a lead track and all.

It seems as if I am missing the German shunter gatherer culture, just because I project a short train on an entangled single track line crossing its own path in a river valley - like in the historic Sauerland photo below?

No, I leave the maintenance of that tradition to the esteemed brother in arms on the other side of the big pond.

I am a big fan of two-faced layouts with a central divider allowing for separate sceneries. This Z-scale plan could be used in H0 scale, too: One one side is a downtown passenger terminal - boasting a engine turntable and express freight tracks - with passenger station tracks disappearing under a large overall roof, and on the other side a rural mainline scene.

Earlier today, I presented already the urban side of this janus-headed layout - without mentioning the other rural side - in the planning thread of forum member applor for illustrating a scenery idea.
IMG_2838.jpg

Here is the rural side.
IMG_2838 (1).jpg

And here the full design.

Horseshoe mania - brainstorming on a 160 x 160 cm square cont´d.
Twisted dogbone with stacked return loops; compared with posts 96 & 99 round trip run extended to +18 m.
wottah1study1.png
Keeping R1 curves in hidden return loops and increasing visible curves to R2 would result in a 185 x 185 cm square. Adding a station siding on the right side would add another 10 cm.

Expanded to a 200 x 200 cm double-bed-size square: Dual-track main line without S-curves in visible area and with a cool corner station, but inner circles purely R1 and no easements on the mainline up to now. Thus, still room for improvement, but now I am confident that this concept is doable on that surface. Btw: Compared with the "Wottah Horseshoe" concept presented in post no. 73, the main line trough the scenery portion is more prominent.
:o)
wottah1study2R1.png
Here the artist´s perception:
wottah1study2R1artist.png
The crossover in front of the upper return loop tunnel portal allows a fast train uphill running on the "left" track to pass a slow uphill train on the "right" track and change over to the right track after the manouever (before becoming a downhill train meeting the still struggling slow uphill train).

Reflecting on the 142 x 130 cm approach of post no. 103. The rollercoaster impression could be avoided by converting the continuous loop to a dogbone design. Like that the size grows to 142 x 200 cm.
143cont3.png

Then, stacking the return loops frees space for a station area.

(1) Proud owner of a a 26600 California Zephyr set, but no space to recreate the Feather River Canyon environment?
(2) Proud owner of German class 85 steamer or class 44 electric whose stomping grounds were the Black Forest Hoellentalbahn and no space to recreate a plausible layout setting?

Having 2 x 2 m space (equalling a the size of a double bed) but no clue what to do with it? Here comes a proposal, which could serve for either purpose.
Cz2016dream1.png

Minimum, radius in visible areas is R2. Easements everywhere. The return loops accommodate a 3 m long train, respectively. The three valley station tracks measure 160 to 185 cm in length. For both, return loops and station arrangement, there is still room for maneuver within the 2 x 2 m limit.

And here the artist´s perception based on the Californian approach. Initially, I envisaged using a double-sided backdrop to separate mountain and station areas, but I believe - due to the difference in altitude - that it could be socially acceptable to do without.
Cz2016dream1artist1.png

EDIT: When the central divider is actually left away, Portuguese Creek should be placed in between the station area and the main line where the ramp is gaining altitude from 2 to 6 cm in order to add plausibility.

Translating the above into C track based on R1 curves results in a trii-level L-shaped surface with the outer legs measuring 155 x 155 cm. Bumper to bumper distance is 10 m. Height difference between lowest and highest tracks is about 20 cm.
I am fascinated.

Photos of a mock-up of a tri-level iteration of the theme of post no. 109 in Z scale on 1.1 sqm below. The planner intends to run era V trains.
z1z.pngz3z.png
The main line is a dogbone circuit. The double track main line on the landscape side descends, dives under both the camouflaged main station loop and the branch line station level on top of the latter and ends in a return loop stacked under the cityscape level. A hanging valley squeezed into the open space between the hidden main line dog bone end loops offers great landscaping potential.
20150622_084015.000_ev1o7k.jpg20150622_084134.000_ekqqa9.jpg
The inner two main station sidings are through tracks, actually a double track balloon, a design which allows two mainline trains to meet and/or pass each other. The outer two spurs of the main station are stub tracks. The generous station throat trackage creates a big city station impression. Branch line passenger trains stop at a platform outside the large overall roof. Sometimes a prototypical situation in cluttered downtowns.
z2z.pngz4z.png
Pro: All turnouts are in the open: Con: I don´t know if Z scale trains can cope with the slopes. For H0 models, this would be no problem.

An evolution by the same gent, now an urban scene - again without any turnout - representing an apron of a large station, allowing for some staging via stopping a train in the hidden section while making another one appear. Six trains can be operated simultaneously. N scale dimensions = 65x100 cm.
gleisplangrostadtv1lirco.png

On the second drawing the concept is further condensed, and an industrial spur - a shunter could shuttle on it back and forth - is bridging the mainlines. The upper loops are for suburban trains, and the lower loops for long distance trains.
N scale dimensions = 62x86 cm.

A double-faced backdrop - employed on my current layout - is a great feature to create the feeling of distance.

Some of these layout are so good they make my head explode! I love the current plan for the next layout (thank you Als!), but this one would be gold if I decided to -GASP!- go smaller and actually be able to move around the room...

"With the Helix into the Abyss": A design by German MRR layout designer Ivo Cordes. Assuming that the grid dimensions are 50 cm per box for H0 scale, this translates to 240 x 155 cm.
gleisplan2017Cordes1kompakt-flusstal.jpg
Iteration no. 1 by a German N scaler
gleisplan-cordes-wend1tu62.gif
Iteration no. 2 by the same German N scaler
gleisplan-cordes-wendxbup1.png
It turned out that condensing the initial design in terms of length is easier than in terms of depth due to the helix space requirement. According to the German N scaler, the original Ivo Cordes design measures 160 x 80 cm in N scale, while his own iterations measure 110 x 75 cm in N scale, respectively.

Another Ivo Cordes concept. I like the highly unusual approach, mixing extended and visually appealing runs with shunting potential.

While always intrigued by the visible areas, I am not a fan of the elaborate shadow stations. However, this "conversion" is well made in my view, resulting in an overseeable design.

It looks very similar to some of the z Gauge suitcase layouts.

But it is a cunning use of space. Certainly worth getting out boxes of track pieces and playing with it.

Adorable.

Trying to understand the mainline run, I came up with a schematic:
2017-04-06_15-25-27.png

Even more simplified to make a simple man like myself grasp it:
2017-04-06_15-43-46.png

Considering positions of terminal, passing sidings and turntable, I ignored industry spurs for the sake of clarity. I am not sure about the green dotted line: There is a turnout on the lower level on the upper right hand layout leg leading the track into a tunnel, but I can only guess where the track is going to.

Ak, I think it connects to the dotted line that runs under the terminal on the upper left side of the plan. They are on relatively the same level.

So disentangled and untwisted and reduced to the max, the pattern looks like this.
2017-04-07_10-56-51.png
I am impressed.

More trivia:
- Elevations range from 0 cm (lower station with passing track on lower right hand corner) to 38 cm (long straight bridges of the high line). which ensures the whimsical effects I admire so much.
- Even parallel mainline tracks are separated by being placed at various heights, thus avoiding a crowded impression.
- Although this is a H0n3 gauge design, radii are equivalent of Maerklin R4 (minimum) and R5 (maximum) curves, ensuring elegant train movements.

Circles to the square - here another extreme feasibility study on how many levels can be reached on a 173 x 173 cm surface when two trains are to run on separate mainlines (with the possibility to meet and swap courses)?

Answer: five levels. Dogbone laps (round-trips) measure 15 m and 25 m, respectively. Track height goes from 0 cm to 31 cm. Slopes are between 3% and 4%.

More station action wanted? A shelf with terminal tracks connected via a wye to the mainline at a height of 15 cm could be added in an elegant way. Hooking up to "level 0" could be useful for creating further layover tracks below the wye-connected terminal (this requires a "diving" by 2 cm to make it with enough clearance under the "inverted reverse loop ramp"). Terminal track length depends on personal taste and space.

Same, same, but different - another extreme feasibility study on a 183 x 112 cm surface for two trains running on separate mainlines (with the possibility to meet and swap courses). Three levels. two separate dogbone laps (round-trips) measure 15 m and 22 m, respectively. An extensive long 29 m roundtrip over both circuits can be combined. Track height goes from 0 cm to 16 cm. Slopes are between 3% and 4%. With clever switching, meeting and passing is possible in the terminal area.

Artist´s view.
2017artist100.png
There is a lot of room for improvement, as squeezing in more track, having a more elegant station throat, incorporating easements, lengthening track lengths for accommodating long U.S. style trains as well as improving the appearance of the gorge. Still, given that this is the equivalent of the surface of our dinner table, I am quite impressed to learn what is possible.

Daydreaming...

Ruling grade 2.5%, return loops accommodate 4 m long trains. Gorge width between tracks = 20 cm (of which river width = 10 cm), which is good enough as my Blue River RR layout demonstrated. Mountain division roundtrip like that, i.e. ignoring future station trackage = 24 m (River division = 5 m).
