Hi, Could someone please remind me which ones are the newer models known to have been affected by zinc pest? Not just Marklin other manufactures too.
I know the Marklin seetal and kof could suffered but read that there are others. I also know of the brawa streamlined steamer and a couple of Hornby although I don't know their numbers.
Thank you!

Other than the Maerklin (Brawa) Kof and the Maerklin Seetal crocodile, there have been a few models by Maerklin and other companies that have had problems with metal deterioration, including the made in China US boxcars by Maerklin.
For other manufacturers, you can simply Google Zinkpest and the brand, eg "Zinkpest Roco" or "Zinkpest Brawa" and so on...

I know for sure that the Hornby Class 31 (Brush type 2) models suffer from this problem. My son has one which has cracked the plastic body because of the distortion in the metal. |

Thank you all, that's exactly what I wanted to know but I thought someone on another thread mentioned a third marklin lok having problems.
I have at least one of the plastic boxcar sets from about 2004 that doesn't show any problem so far but when I looked at it I thought the base was plastic too. I suppose I was wrong and might have some disaster waiting to happen on a hot summer. I knew someone who had a lot, the Pennsylvania set among others (I think UP too) a few years ago he was starting to have problems with some but I thought their kids were mistreating them, may be they were too but now everything seem to fall into place.

Recently there were reports about early Piko ES 64 U2 models with zinc pest. I thought the problem with the Kof was more widespread and not just limited to two models, that's a bit of a relief for me as I don't have either of those but seeing that Piko was also affected I am glad I am generally not buying immediately models coming on the market, it's a big disappointment it is coming to this that you no longer can trust new products. For several decades most industries were fairly reliable. We have gone full circle and we are now back to times when everything had a high failure rate and hear of recalls all the time often because of dangerous products. There is a common denominator but lets not start another fire here there is one already burning nearby. While I haven't had the new zinc pest in my models I have experienced a lot of faulty decoders, two in piko loks and several more in Marklin mainly from the early 2000's era.

Note that the newer seetal crocs have this rectified. Marklin sent me a new frame to replace a zinc pested one, and after 5-10 years no trouble yet... |

Only the first bunch of Brawa BR 06's were effected. Brawa sent me a new body right away at no charge. Best service ever.
