Hi
I am looking to buy some interesting Railtop cars which I will run on my Marklin C track layout. The cars on sales arE WITH DC wheelsets. Can I run these cars smoothly on C track or do I need to change the wheels? If I want to add lights to these cars, can I use Marklin's center rail pick up shoe?
Is it possible to order replacement boxes from Railtop? Thanks a bunch in advance.

Thank you for your note. I posted my queries on this forum because I am going to be running the RailTop cars with my Marklin locomotive on C Track. I am not aware if the company is still in existence or not. In addiiton, I believe get info on RailTop is a little hard to come by since most of the forums are German speaking and was hoping that one of the fellow forum members from Germany/ Switzerland maybe able to help.
If you see an issue with my post, I am more than happy to delete. Thanks

Chris, Your post is fine. It's just that I don't think that there are any Railtop users here. I can't remember any mention of one in the past 13 years I have been on the forum.. This is most likely why John suggested contacting Railtop.. That said, the question has been asked and now we just need to wait for our European friends to get out of bed - it is 2am over there at the moment - and provide the answer.. Cheers, Adrian |

I am not familiar with the brand but unless there is something out of the ordinary with the wheel flanges it's unlikely they cause you any problems. AC wheels are generally better to use with marklin because of better conductivity but I wouldn't worry too much unless you are having problems. Changing wheels for new ones in many wagons can make a noticeable difference price wise and you may not need to. When in doubt if I plan to buy many of something I am doubtful I just risk buying one and seeing how it performs.

Hi,
This is actually an issue of wheel difference between märklin wheels and DC wheels.
- the inner dimension between the wheels are a little different: 13.8 mm for Märklin, and 14.2 for DC - the flange of the Märklin-wheels is wider, for instance is this used in Märklin switches by letting the wheel run on the flange through the switch where there's plastic rail. In this way the wheel will take the power from the bottom instead of the rail. This makes it problematic to convert a short DC lok to 3-rail as the wheels will not get contact in some of the switches.
What you can do, and I have done it successfully, is to gently press the wheels together to the correct measure. I found the perfect tools for this in the Intermodellbau in Dortmund some years ago, but I don't recall the company name, sorry!

/Peder Peder I think this most probably is the best solution you've suggested by pressing the wheels slightly inwards. I have done exchanges for some time, even from Märklin to HAG wheels, Chris, your questions are legitimate, I just thought to get an answer quickly to contact the company direct as Stefan has supplied a website for this company. I have some carriages with DC wheels and haven't found a problem as yet (Märklin K and C - Track) John |

I have quite the collection of RailTop models, ranging from the RAm TEE to the SBB ABt and BDt pilot coaches and including the OBB Eurocity and EuroNight coaches. I have used them all on Maerklin C-Track (R3-R5) and not have experienced any issues. I have equipped most of the coaches with Roco's Universal Close Coupler. On some models, the use of Maerklin close couplers does not leave sufficient space between coaches for coupling. The Roco Universal CC is about 1mm longer (per part) which resolves this issue. As far as installing AC illumination in RailTop coaches, RailTop (Mr. Doll) is actually the rights holder for the Flusterschleifer (Whisper Slider) marketed by Roco. RailTop has this slider (with a different attachment design that Roco) as well as the ground (axle) contacts available on the www.railtop.ch site. I have not installed lighting in any of my RailTop models. The RAm and ABt/BDt pilot coaches were bought as AC models (head/taillights). The rest of the coaches are DC. I have found Mr. Doll to be helpful in general. He did ship me a replacement box for one that was damaged in delivery. It was a generic box and did not come with a sticker for the model. Shortly after the problems with Modern Gala and LS Models, Mr. Doll was able to provide me with one additional OBB Bmz by combining parts from items that had been returned due to damage. This enabled me to have sufficient coaches to complete my EN Wiener Walzer, EN Zuerichsee and EC Transalpin consists. Since then, I have supplemented these trains with new models from LS Models (including double-deck sleepers from Memoba) and from ACME (Eurofima rebuilds). I am currently waiting for the OBB version of the WRmz137, which has been announced by Memoba (ACME Model). Which RailTop coaches are you looking at? Regards Mike C

/Peder Thanks Peder. I am looking to buy a BDt Steuerwagen. Are your comments specific to RailTop DC rolling stock on Marklin C track?

I am planning to buy BDt Steuerwagen which can go with my HAG Re 4/4II Zugkraft Aargau loco and EW1 coaches. This is what I am looking to get but the some of the eBay prices have been prohibitively high. I don't think the retail price of these BDt Steuerwagens is actually this high!

I did see one on ricardo.ch this weekend, but the price was high. If you are paying in US$, it is pretty close to the CHF right now, but for other currencies, like the CAD$, the CHF has increased by almost 20% in the past two years as it moved closer to the value of the EUR. https://www.ricardo.ch/k...ft-aargau/v/an818158630/The reason for these high prices is that RailTop, like LS Models and ACME, produces very limited runs of each model. I think that the maximum quantity per run might be 500 and I do not know if that includes AC and DC, or separate. This means that a production run can sell out rather quickly and the items become relatively hard to find and consequently, they attract high prices. The original price was AFAIR was 96 EUR or 129 CHF (DC) and 98,50 (AC). The Zugkraft Aargau version was commissioned by the shop Wemoba. They had a guaranteed stock quantity and the remaining inventory was available through the dealer network. The fact that RailTop ceased productions by 2008 means that there were only limited follow up production of most models. A second series of the NPZ BDt was issued with a different coach number around the same time (2007) that the version in green with the red face was released. You would still have to convert the model to AC. You can inquire with Mr. Doll if he still has the parts to convert a DC model to AC. I believe that the slider has to be mounted on the rear bogie and wired to the appropriate terminal on the circuit board and the wires for the wheel contacts have to be unsoldered from the circuit board and then merged to the contact for a single return. AFAIK there is no difference between the circuit boards on the AC and DC versions, so no other changes would be required. The inversion of lights is accomplished by a switch that is mounted on one of the axles of the cab end bogie, which completes a connection which sets the lights for either push or pull. I am not certain which is the default and which is the activated setting. If you are swapping out the axles for AC wheel sets, you would have to make sure that the switch was properly removed and reinstalled as necessary. The AC slider for this model is Part. 99001.
