Hello. I'm building a 20 tracks shadow station and have a question regarding the exit turnouts for each parking track. Do I really need to install motor on each turnout since the train will only run in one direction? The trains can run against the turnout setting without any problems, or?

Hi. Yes you are right. The exit turnouts do not need to be actuated.

100% correct - my last layout contained two shadow stations which doubled as return loops for a through station. There was no need to power the exit points which (thankfully) was one area that saved a substantial amount of money. That opportunity does not come often in our hobby so seize it while you can - it will at least justify the purchase of your next loco!

My only comment is to watch out for very lightweight wagons, usually from manufacturers other than Marklin. I have some Joeuf and Lima wagons that would jump off the track when meeting a trailing turnout set the wrong way.
The solution is of course to add more weight to the wagon and then they will easily push past the point blades. |

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

I have motorized the exit turn-outs in my lay-out, but only use those when I have bring the train back for a reason. Not so much use, I could have used manual settings when necessary. Never had a problem with any train.

I have a lot of exit-turnouts on my layout, and none of the motorized. Regarding the problem RayF mentions, there is a small remedy you can apply; Remove the tension-spring for the tongue! That way, once the switch has been split up, the tongue will remain in that position, and no spring presses it back to another position. (Of course this does not work if you also use the switch as an entry point, as a so-called RückFallWeiche.) |

Thank you for the advices.. I'm only running Marklin wagons so I will keep the turnout as is without motors.
