Hello Friends,

There is a possibility that I will be back in model railroad business.

We moved again and now I probably have a room to build a new train table.

I make a rough sketch already.

The facts:
- The size is limited to 3 x 5 m (the current design is 3,3 x 5,5 m).
- The table height: +900 mm.
- Floor space used: 75%.
- There will be no scenery.
-> The scenery man (grand)pa lives to far to help on a frequently base.
-> For me personally the fun of rolling stock and the automation goes above having a realistic layout.

- There will be much track as possible which should be reached easily.
- The sketch contain some minor geometry error but that is because I do not want to draw the tracé again all the time, using SCARM.
- The shape is simple, a zero in the centre of the room.
- Because the history and the amount of old C-Track in stock this layout will be C-Track again.
- The exact geometry will follow later.
-> The shunting area can be something completely different, depending on the number of crossings I have in stock.
-> The bridge will divide the manhole between the shunting area and the main track.

- The trains and the tracks will be controlled by Win Digipet again, so everything will be automated. Also the traverse.
-> Control unit(s) (main)track: Intellibox unit 1 + LISSY + all other present LocoNet devices + Windows Laptop.
-> Program and test track: Intellibox unit 2.

- For the main track I will invest into the smooth turn-outs for a more natural movement of the trains.
- The U-turn will be a single track under the table.
- The stations will be very abstract.
- There will be a lot of signals and lamps again because I like that.
- The original structure of the home should stay intact.
- The budget is limited (compared to the old days).
-> I have a family now with a fantastic wife and great kid.
-> The new home and surrounding environment still need some renovation.

- The turn table is not projected in this layout (yet) and the remaining K-Track will probably be used for show cases.[/list]

Hope I have a release candidate with the final dimensions for the tracé soon.

The current tracé sketches are included in the added PDF file.

Looks like an ambitious plan.
There isn't much scenery at the Maasvlakte, until you want to model large cranes and harbours, but you don't want a scenery.
Planning on a place where you can load your containers on the trains? Can be automated.
You see a lot of long freight trains in 2, 3 even 4 engines pulling the load. Lots of ore trains, container trains and tank trains. No passenger trains at all.
And of course a lot of shunting.
Have fun with the planning and realisation.

I draw another variant where all the tracks are projected along the walls.

Approx. 3,6 m wide x 5,5 m long.

I rotated design 3 a bit so the smooth points are now located in straight track which saves some space.

It gives a bit more floor space to stand between the trains.

The maximum reach distance lay between the 90 end 100 cm.

When enough space left I will try to install the turn table too and park the loco’s under the main track.

Because of the lack of space maybe the shadow station should be a closed showcase also, located under the station and shunting area.

Otherwise the showcases (pyramid shape) should be located above the station and shunting area.

The roof is not flat but ^.

I have updated the fifth variant.

As shown on the image below.

Now it is possible to drive in and out the shadow station (over one track) without turinng the trains on the main track.

And all the (4) bridges are located in the center of the table.

RC1

I still like variant 3 over variant 5.

I have a few ideas to keep the layout between 3 x 5 meters and extend the tracks with two extra levels.

The two mid station are shortened with 40 cm to fit the layout.

To compensate that lose I added 2 extra levels to the layout:
- Level 0 contain the main tracks (0-shape).
- Level +1 will get a head station and a bridged track to a traverse area.
- Level -1 will get a shadow station and a side tracks to a turn table area.

See the image below.

I will work this out another time.

But the idea is that the operator can play with or the traverse area, or the turn table area, or shunting around, while the trains are running on the main tracks.

By introducing the extra levels with the head station and the shadow station we also get a long track for the shuttle trains like the TEE and the ICE.

I modified the previous sketches and get to a release candidate 1 version 1.

I draw the two slopes to the upper level (level +1) and the lower level (level -1) which contain the head station + the traverse and the shadow station with the track to the turn-table.

De length of both slopes can be extended by mirror the both levels -1 and +1.

The table will be an open table so I can reach everything easily.

The size of the main tracks will fit into the 3 x 5 m area, the rest fit into the 3.5 x 5.5 area.

After some measurements the max. width can be 3.7m, so maybe I can stand at the side of the entrance of the room. I will check that later when we finish the renovation of the room.

Since this is release candidate any comments are evaluated to improve the layout.

Below the colored layout with the 3 levels.

Red = top level +1 with head station and traverse.

Grey = main track level 0.

Blue = lower level -1 with shadow station and turn-table.

Orange = slope from level 0 to level +1.

Light blue = slope from level 0 to level -1.

On both the head- and shadow stations I can add a loop at the end with track R2 to turn trains if necessary/wanted.

I added some modifications to the layout.

The black and yellow dots are two new slopes from level -1 to level 0 (black) and from level 1 to level 0 (yellow).

When I place the turn-table inside the main track (red arrow) the black dotted slope will be connected like the purple dots (optional).

The green dots is an extra connection from the turn-table track to the shadow station, where the new track runs until the end of the shadow station to place the Loc before the train (green arrow).

I draw the new ramps in Win Track, the dotted ones in the previous image.

With this new configuration it is possible to drive from the shadow station to shadow station and from shadow station to head station directly and from head station to head station and from head station to shadows station via some rounds over the main track etc. etc.

Now it is time to calculate the necessary table dimensions to fit all those tracks on and make the first sketches in Win Digipet.

I'm thinking about building a bridge over both the shadow and head station.

Therefore I will lower the table Heights.

I have some bridge sections, placed on the upper right in the main tracks.

The other bridge in the middle is for myself to acces the both operator stands inside the layout/table.

I make a start with the signal blocks for the automation of the lay-out.

The second ramps are not drawn here but they will have the same block fragments like the ramps showing.

The yellow sections are for braking and the red ones are for stopping.

The green sections are for effects like whistle blowing or something like that.

The Dark and light blue are the same braking and stopping sections for shorter trains.

In the past I added many extra sections to the tracks to optimise the train movement like smooth braking etc. so the final sectioning can be a bit different but the principle is the same.

To refine the automation I also combine detection signals from the power consumption and the mass detection.

I give some lay-out parts a name.

And i make some small modifications.

Both the lower and upper stations will be identical.

A shadow station with more parking space will be under level -1.

I will draw the whole thing again in WinTrack someday. BigGrin

I modified the layout a bit to RC3 and decide to make both the lower and upper station identical/symmetric (with just a few small differences).

Now it is possible to shuttle in one way from level -1 to level +1.

And drive level up level down continuously.

The position of the turn table and the transfer table is not final yet.

Ambitious approach. I could imagine a flyover bridging a yard or a station with areas on two separate levels, but a prototypical excuse for a multi-level layout themed in the low lands is a challenge.

I am thinking about a table lay-out like the classic Marklin lay-outs form the old magazines.

Those lay-outs with the white clean tables with the M-Track directly mounted on.

And just a few scenery, all non realistic.

Another member on this forum also build this type of lay-out, I do not remember who that was. Confused

I think that the slow down sections (yellow) on Oostvorne don't need to be so long as the running speeds on those lines are probably not going to be high.

@Alsterstreek: the Plexiglas looks great in some occasions. Thanks for the inspiration.

@DaleSchultz: the ramp is longer than it need to be. On level 0 it runs flat along the main track.

I shoot a few pictures from the future MRR room.

As you can see it need some renovation first before we can start with building the table.

I already remove the old soft plates (soft wood fibre plates).

Carbage bags on the upper left picture.

The wooden beams at the ceiling will be removed so we get a real V-shape roof.

The roof will be isolated with Rockwool and plaster plates and get a nice polar white Latex paint.

The walls get a new paper and some polar white Latex paint.

Be very careful about what beams you remove from roof as you want a nice safe place to run your trains.Maybe ask advise from someone before you remove anything from room as everything is there to serve a purpose. Take care and enjoy building the layout. Eddie

@MalinAC (Eddie): do not worry my friend, the wooden beams were mainly for supporting the lower ceiling, but the roof will get some reinforcement before installing the isolation.

I draw the track plan a slightly different in Win Digipet.

The laptop boot up but internet explorer does not work anymore since these old XP laptops are not supported anymore and are marked as dangerous for the user. LOL

But this OLD machine is just for the trains. BigGrin

I updated the track plan in Win Digipet with most of the necessary information, now it is just a matter of time the trains start running automatically, if I had the tracks already. RollEyes

The base movements are almost finished, the movements around the Turn Table and Transfer Table must be seen as 2 separate projects (special movements).

There is a possibility that I have to move to the garage.

In that case we get a more traditional Marklin layout, also with 3 levels.

Blue tracks is the main track, red is the upper track and white is the (shadow)station.

Orange are the ramps between blue and red and green are the ramps between blue and white.

The levels will be at +900, +1100 and +1300 mm in this case.

And it is Always possible to ad another extra level above the other until the ceiling is reached.

The yellow and green dots are the connection tracks where the trains can drive around on that specific level (not drawn yet).

This layout can almost be build completely with the current track parts in stock.

I make a new variant based on the garage variant.

It fits better in the planned train room. The table dimensions are now 3 x 5.5 m. So we get a 80 cm walking path at the front of the table.

Like the garage variant it is easy to add an extra layer for example a bridge track above the operators head from the lower left to the upper right.

The shadow station can be different in the final situation (if i choose this variant). Probably it wil get an turning option too, under the TT's.

I optimised the first layout to suit the available space in the train room.

This lay-out is easy to modify in length to fit between the V shaped roof.

And I only need to buy just a view C-Rail parts extra.

Also the table is much easier to build because we do not have the non-symmetric curved table parts anymore.

Ofcource LISSY should be on this ‘adventure’ .

So I decide to implement LISSY on the ‘air-track’ which is added to the layout from the station ‘OOSTVOORNE’ at the upper dead end track.

Only the trains with a infra-red tansmitters will Go UP!

All the other trains run their routes via WIN DIGIPET.

How cool is that people!

The helix fit well in this table concept and I never build a helix before so it is time to build that to.

The ‘air-track’ will be above the heads of the operators.

Hopefully the modules still work after 7-8 years

I also thinking making the table segments hollow to hide all the wiring (tubes).

Layout SCARM

A part of the table light can be mounted on the tube construction of the ‘AIR-TRACK’. The main (room) light will be TL and is mounted in the top.

Alternative: under the table layers I can place LED stripes where each upper layer lights the under layer, the lowest layer will lighten the floor. In this case the LED stripes on the ‘AIR-TRACK’ should light UP to the ceiling (no direct lighting).

We almost finished isolating the roof.

Hopefully the plaster plates will be mounted on Monday next week, can't wait until the room is finished. BigGrin

I updated the track plan in SCARM and add the track Heights. I added a few points in the main track to add the option to drive around on the ramps without taking the points.

The 3D view gives a good impression about this design. The 'Air-Track' fits well with the rest of the layout. As expected.

dear sir; the horizontal beams that you have removed were put there for good reason by the guy who built your house in the first place. in the U. S. we call them collar ties. they tension the upper third of the opposing gable rafters so they resist separation from the ridge beam during periods of unbalanced loads, heavy winds or snow. please understand i am not trying to critique your work i am concerned for your safety. nor do i know what you did in the other side of the room. i only saw two photos. be very, very careful. i also have a question; did you provide for any ventilation between the insulation and the roof? if your train room is heated and outdoor temperatures vary, moisture will develop between underside of the roof and insulation causing mold, rot etc. mike.

Hello Mike,

The main beams for the support of the roof lay on both sides, from the left to the right of the room, on stone walls. Above and over these main beams lay planks and above those planks lay the roof pans. The beams I remove, only supporting the planks that rest on the dormer. It is the connection between the angled roof and the dormer.

I did not remove the beams you called ‘collar ties’ but I replaced them in another way to support the planks which are connected to the dormer.

The ventilation is OK but will be optimised with extra air in-/outlets at the side of the dormer.

There is no damp closing foil between the insulation and the roof!

I insulated my layout room in a similar way, but never got to installing the plaster boards.

It will take some manoeuvering around the layout though....

I did some fine tuning on the HELIX and the rest of the layout and updated the 3D model of the table.

The HELIX now contains a mix of R2, R3 and R4 tracks (R2,R3,R2,R4,R2,R3,R2,R4,R2,... etc.)

The HELIX get a final slope of 3,5% with 6.25 turns ans approx. 2.8% with 7.25 turns.

Depeding on the HELIX construction it will get 6.25 or 7.25 turns (tube of flat plate).

The other slopes are 3%.

The plaster plates are fixed along the roof, the extra variable ventilation is placed.

The signal plan.

On the lower section with the turn-table I place the 8 year old VIESMANN SEMAPHORE signals, hope they still work.

On the upper levels it will be the modern light signals, depending on the total costs it wil be VIESMANN signals too. I know I will need the signals modules too.

Signals

Blue/Light blue/Yellow = block signals.
Green = enter signals.
Red = exit signals.

Below you find the feedback contact shema and feedback contact principe.

The feedback contacs are a mix of current detection and mass detection.

The main tracks (BLACK) are all protected with 5 feedback contacts, 3 mass + 2 current.

The shunting and remise tracks (RED) are all protected with 4 feedback contacts, 3 mass + 1 current.

The parking tracks (BLUE) are all protected with 2 feedback contacts, 1 mass + 1 current.

The tracks with the current feedback are alle stop sections and shunting positions.

The LISSY traject (WHITE) only have mass detection to protect the tracks from lost train parts (coaches). BigGrin
