Hi, bought some Märklin Schotterwagen (4610) cheap on ebay (no boxes), the seller has always cheap carriages on ebay, some of them are damaged but this is why I buy them, nobody would notice this when the run on the layout, that they have been repaired. I haven't got the exact colour to repaint the repaired parts but this is not a major hurdle. I cleaned the wheels, replaced a couple of railing and repaired the upper flap which all of them had been broken off and had been missing. little rust on the levers and chute and I've re-painted them with black paint. all of them (6) will be filled with ballast, there is one particular carriage which had been glued together from 6 broken parts and by the time I fill it with ballast none of the repair can be seen. some touch up still has to be done. river6109 attached the following image(s): |

Hi all, I have five of these Märklin 4610 Schotterwagen. Two are the older type and three are the newer type. I had more of these, but I sold those a little broken ones. All these five are in good condition. I have three different 4610 boxes, 1958 (red), 1965 (light blue) and 1973 (dark blue). I took some photos in my small garage today and decided to take some of these five 4610´s behind an old 3031 BR 81 004 from the beginning of the 1960´s: In my opinion these are interesting freight cars as they can be loaded first and unloaded with the levers. I have not used anything with these five though as they are too good condition ones for that. Regards, Janne |

Hi John, It will be a great looking train when you have them all loaded and running on your layout. You have a very long auto transport train then . I have only 6 of these 4612. I have been collecting some newer type coal cars from the sets 46030 and 46245 as I like long coal trains. 4610 cars are one of the best looking freight cars from the older "real quality" Märklin. I only have one of these 4610, but I want to get at least two more to run a short ballast train.
The second hand examples I've seen recently are all a lot more expensive since they stopped making them new a couple of years ago. I'm kicking myself for not having obtained a couple when they were only about 10 euro new. |

Ray, German ebay shows a lot of them but not cheap. another reason I buy them cheap they don't have a box to go with it and as mentioned above they all have been damaged. I look at it this way, to have 5 in good order or to have 20 a bit in a mess but after refurbishing them and loading them with ballast they look like they have been used for many years on the railways. does anybody have any ideas how many they used on a train consist or was it the only ballast carriage before the introduced the more modern dump car carriage 4631. I'm using 6 at the moment pulled by an Austrian diesel loco and this is for my provincial railway track. I've got another provincial railway running besides the maintrack, sort of, and this line can take more carriages, 8 or more, so I'm still looking out for a view more. |
