My grandparents bought me the 8167 set back in 1983 on their visit to Germany. I would like to set the train up and pass it on to my kiddo. However, I lost the transformer in a move. From what I can recall, the transformer was a big blue block with a red dial that controlled the speed and a red switch for forward/reverse. I have looked on ebay and found a couple that fit the description but what I do not know is the spec on the transformer that is required for that set. I have looked through the box and I don't see anything stating the power requirements for the locomotive. Does anyone know the model of the transformer that works with this set and/or the power requirements?

Also, the last time it was set up and running was in the late 80's or early 90's. Are there any general care/preparatory recommendations once I do get a transformer and the kit set up?

Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.

Colour and shape don't matter. Old Power Packs supply up to 8 V to drive locos, newer Power Packs up to 10 V. Both types can be used for all locos.

The new controller 67013 comes with a wall wart for 230 V, but has a standard plug and you can use a universal (adjustable) power supply for 120 V (typically 100 through 240 V) instead.
Or get 67271 which is made for 120 V.

Older power packs for Z scale (brown or blue) will also do.

Märklin had a period when they used "motor glue" instead of oil. Sometimes locos won't move at all as the hardened oil locks them up, sometimes the hardened oil brakes so much that the motor might burn through.
So once you have a power pack and try the trains, only apply full power for a second or two and if the loco does not run fast, turn power off and clean the loco (degrease and lubricate with good oil).
It could be that you stuff is old enough and will run as new once you put them on the track.
Regards
Tom

Thanks so much for the info. I really appreciate it.

If I get a power pack with 10v and it's an 8v locomotive will I risk burning out the motor?

I already wrote that, according to Märklin, both types can be used with all locos.

Sorry I made a typo in my last post. I meant a 12VA transformer not a 10VA. I purchased a Marklin Mini Club Model# 6727 12VA 115volt/60 cycle transformer.

Thanks.

V stands for Volts. Volts have to match.
VA stands for Watts. More Watts don't harm.

The 6727 was made for Mini Club aka. Z gauge and will be fine.
