Hi,
I am planning to upgrade my 30 years old, (but in excellent condition) Marklin railroad HO to Digital. I would like to retrofit 3 Marklin locomotives to Digital: 1. A 3003 locomotive with tender class DB 24; 2. A 3047 freight locomotive with tender class DB 44 with installed 7226 smoke generator (identical as the digital loco 37880); 3. A 3075 hydraulic locomotive class V 160 (the same as the digital 37803).
It seems to me that converting the locos into the digital propulsion system will cost me almost the same as buying a new one with already installed digital board. What are the arguments to take in account, for or against converting each of these locos into the digital propulsion or the Delta module besides the cost?
I would like to insert a sound module into the 3047 and the 3075 (diesel sound). What sound module works with Delta system? I have been told that older locos, especially steam where new axels have sensors to trigger the chuffing sound, would not work well (except perhaps just bell and whistle sounds). Is it true?

First of all, Digital and Delta are basically the "same". They both run on the same type of "digital current". The Delta controllers are limited to 4 (5 with an addition trottle) digital addresses.
A big difference is that you cannot activate loco decoder functions like lights, sounds etc in Delta. This lack of feature is what generally inhibits sound operation since you simply cannot turn the different sounds on! Some locos may have the motor sound on by default, but the bells & whistles will be unreachable since they are on decoder function outputs.
Sensors that trigger the chuffs are no problem as long as you can activate the sound itself, or if it is activated by default.
