Hi all,

In a previous post https://www.marklin-user...Industry-track-5120.aspx I promised to perform a check which of my loc's would be able to handle the M5120 industry radius (286 mm). Today I set up a test loop and performed a check on each loc: 5 rounds clockwise and 5 rounds counterclockwise for both forward and rearward direction. The result was a big surprise to me: Even large locs like the crocodile and BR44 did not have any trouble ! Even the TEE RAM which is a notorious derailer completed the test, although the wagons where at the max of their capability to adjust to the curvature. See picture below.

THE RESULTS
Locs that do not even physically fit into the radius:
37080 DB BR10
37774 DB VT04

Locs that fit but derailed during the test:
3053 DB E03
3098 DB BR38 (tender gets stuck to cabine when driving rearwards)
3102 DR BR53
39081 DB VT08.5

Locs that negotiated R286 without issue, in all directions:
3000 DB BR89
3005 DB BR23
3015 SBB Be 6/8'''
3016 DB VT795
3021 DB V200
3022 DB E94
3029 Small tank loc
3037 DB E41
3038 SNCF BB9200
3039 DB 110
3041 ÖBB 1043
3047 DB BR44
3050 SBB Ae 6/6
3051 NS 1200
3058 DB 151
3068 NSB Di3
3070 SBB/NS RAm
3075 DB V160
3084 DB BR50
3085 DB BR03
3087 KLVM 3087
3092 K.Bay.Sts.B. S3/6
3326 NS 1600
3518 DR BR18.4 (S3/6)
3689 NS mP 3000
3748 DB E70
37060 K.Bay.Sts.B. EP3/6
37265 DB ET87

37964 K.Bay.Sts.B. Gt 2x4/4

I know: aesthetics are severly compromised, but that was not the purpose of the test Smile

Feel free to add your experience below.

Thanks for this information Gregor.

I find it interesting that your V200 (3021) managed the curves, mine doesn't like the 5120 track at all.

There seems to be an amount of luck involved. This uncertainty is probably also the reason that Marklin does not exactly specify which locs can handle these curves and which not.

I maybe should add that I ran the tests at what I think are prototypical speeds. At maximum speed the number of failures would probably have been higher.

best regards,
Gregor

I'll add to the list of loc's that can run on the 5120

3412 K.W St. E T 5 Tank Loc WUT.5
37655 BR V 60 103
3032 BR 81
39300 BR230 001-0 DB BR 230
39302 ML 2200 CC
39565 Crocodile CE 6 14303
37906 V90 Diesel

I use the 39302 to pull
45644 10 Car US Freight Set Tin Plate and
45653 American Box Cars (5)
when it is not travelling on my freight line.

I use the 5120's as an 'industrial loop', connecting my freight line to my freight yard. I have had some derailments with the 39302 pulling 15 cars but that is seldom and random I run at moderate to slow speed. My freight trains are typically 8 cars plus loc.

Hello,

I really wonder if the 3001 loco can run on this radius.

Thanks in advance, Jon Håvard :) Laugh

I don't see why not. It's quite a small 0-6-0 engine.

Very interesting and very useful post. I have a couple of (avoidable) spots where I've used the K version of the industrial radius (2210) on my layout. As previously stated, all of the smaller locos seem to be fine with it, it's just the locos with long chassis and non articulated wheels. I think the 2200 series K track industrial radius are a bit tighter for the locos since the rails are stamped (flat top) instead of rolled, which probably makes the tolerances just a bit tighter.

To add to the list of those that work no problem (mostly obvious):

2863 VW DHG700 (loco from this set)
3003 DB BR24
3060 ATSF F7 (pulling 4060 dummy) - at limit of how far front coupler will turn
3062 DRGW F7 (pulling 4062 dummy) - at limit of how far front coupler will turn
3065 DB V60
3072 DB V100
3096 DB BR86
3304 DB BR80
3141 DB CL260 (V60)
3313 DB BR75
30210 DB V200 (3021 repro)
36120 Thomas
36826 DB Kof III
37256 DRG Kittle
39646 DB BR64

I have a few locos that will run on this radius, but make unhappy struggling noises when doing so, so I do not normally run them on the industrial sections:

3082 DB BR41
3085 DB BR03
29625 DB BR41 from this starter set (runs better than the above 3082 on the industrial section)
30050 DB BR23 (3005 repro)

I have a 3309 DB BR85 which I have not tried on this radius yet, I will have to give it a go and let you know how it turns out.
