Hi all,

An hour ago we received our new 1946 '341' green tinplate passenger coach.
I bought it in a German Ebay shop, here > http://stores.ebay.nl/fl....c0.m14.l1581&_pgn=1
It was the neatest one I could find in a week searching.
To be honest, I have paid a lot of money for here because she is in a super excellent condition, especially for her age (66 years!)
I found out that I'd rather buy an expensive Marklin item I really like it, then ....
But Wow, I love my new sweet 1st and 2nd class Coach....

Hi Marco,

Great 341 car...pretty expensive but the condition is good. In 1946 both tinplate and full-metal cast trucks were used but yours has the slightly burnished coupler which makes it from 1946.

Here you can see some examples from 1945 with boxes and very shiny Nickel-plated couplers:

Best,

Paul

Are the wheels on this coach in good condition? I have several of these coaches but the wheels suffer from zink pest and are cracked and falling appart. I have some used wheel sets but the way these coaches are build I will have to grind of the rivits to perform the job . Not wanting to damage the coach I decided to hold off. Does anyone here have a good method for replacing these wheel sets?

Best Regards
Al

Hi Al,

I see some oxidation on the Wheels, no zincpest I think.
Maybe one wheel looks a little bit suspicious with a small crack in it.
My sons played and ride with the coach for 30 minutes or so on bumpy 3600 tracks and and nothing happened.
The wheels looks very easy to replace.

Can you show us some photos of your coaches?? That would be nice.

Marco

There is a big difference in exchanging wheels if you have the full-metal cast bogies which cannot be bent (as compared to the tinplate bogies). It is much harder to replace wheels on these. If you try and bend them apart the rivets will probably break.

Whenever I replace these wheels the trucks are also usually broken off so that solves the problem BigGrin

Best regards,

Paul

attached are a couple of pictures of the bottom and axles of my 341. I have spare wheel sets but installing these is not straight forward. Any recommendations on how to go about this or should I just leave it alone?

Best Regards
Al

Al, thanks for sharing these photo's.

And Wow, you're indeed not happy if your wheels looks that awful.
Zincpest is a horrible thing.
Maybe replacing the whole wheel frame is the best solution ??
Ritter have lots of spare parts for this coach, including wheel frames and so on.
