It's a 4511, pulverised coal silo wagon.

According to Helmut Kern, this wagon was produced from 1955 to 1979.

It was also available as a kit under catalogue number 4911 from 1958 to 1969. and as Primex model 4551 from 1980 to 1987

Ian,

Your wagon is or was a kit (4911).

I think it is 4911, You note there is a missing - ladder, buffer, etc?

Hi all,

Wow!!!, lot's of interest in a wagon I got for nothing.Smile

The number is 4511 on the side of it, and Stephen is right, both ladders are missing, an end hand rail and 3 of the buffer's.

On a positive note, it has the original spring underneath, and apart from the missing parts is in not to bad a condition.

Thanks for all the feedback on the wagon. ThumpUp ThumpUp

One way of telling is to have a look at the buffers. On models of the 45xx series they are metal, but on corresponding 49xx series wagons they are plastic*). The way I mounted the plastic buffers back in the 1960-ies was to use a flat screwdriver, heat it over a candle and then press on the backside of the buffer which is easily seen from the underside of the wagon. In other words, doing a sort of "heat riveting" of the buffers.

So Ian can check if the remaining buffer is plastic, then I'm pretty sure that it is a 4911.

____
*) At least this applies to the relatively few 45xx and 49xx of the same type that I have.

Ray,

I grew up with them

a.) there aren't any buffers left (the kit was supplied with plastic buffers) [these buffers had to be melted from the back to secure it to the frame and any excess heat deformed them or there was no substance left to hold them onto the frame]{superglue wasn't available than}
b.) your couplings had a split pin

I bought them as a kid when money was not plenty and we had no trees in the backgardenBigGrin

Ian,

this is unusual, the picture you've supplied indicates the coupling is secured by a split pin, so you can construct the coupling your self and as one other member mentioned and myself the kit form came with plastic couplings.
It is a bit odd to loose 3 metal buffers and this rarely happens with any Märklin older carriages unless you forcefully remove them.
So whoever had the carriage, part from the missing stepladders someone, if it is in fact a metal coupling has added it to it.

In the end it is still the same carriage, worth almost equal to a Scottish castle (they are going cheap at the moment) but the main different feature was the split pin and plastic buffers.

Hi John,

Thanks for the information on the 4511 wagon and the Scottish castles. Smile

Although I'm still confused, was it a kit built wagon.

Ian.

Very nice, Ian!

I'm also confused about whether it's a kit or not...

Hi Ray,

Thanks. ThumpUp

Of course, being an avid banana van collector, some might say, I'm easily confused. Smile
