Hi all,

the new generation Loksound decoders arrived yesterday and I've connected one to my Primex Diesel loco. The sound was so loud my wife had to shut the bedroom door, which is almost a kilometer away, so to speak.

I'm thinking of putting it in my car and while I wait at traffic lights put the sound on + German Station announcement and the horn.

One has to get a laugh somehow.

Besides my habits, getting off the subject, the sound is great, I also changed the original speaker to a next size up.

there are almost 24 sound slots and it will be interesting, considering my slow loss of memory over the years, how I will manage to press the right function button, it could be instead of sounding the horn before entering a tunnel, the station master announcement will come on.BigGrin.

all I can say, this is a step forward improvement but how 3 or 4 locos will respond to each other regarding the increased sound level.
Another improvement is you can set the volume for each sound slot or the master sound slot.

I haven't looked at all the other improvements if there are any more from the ones I've mentioned.

If anyone is interest in buying one, please let me know via my PM

John

I think the loksound 3.5 and the newer M* loks with sound are plentl loud. What they lack is bass. If only they could figure out how to incorporate higher bass in such tiny speakers, it would be great.

I agree.....that's the truly interesting challenge !

...true acousticians always have worked on HI-FI items for music, like earphones.....but some kind of "bass booster" on such tiny speakers or any kind of special material for the speakers should be too expensive for MRR market...
Anyway, even listenning to expensive HI-FI headphones at a distance of few meters never give a good result in terms of low frequencies ....I'm affraid that the small size of the speakers definitely is an insurmountable obstacle.....

Horn, whistle, or bells are the most typical sound of a train for my liking....the chuff chuff of a steamer , eventually some kinds of roaring diesel in the distance as well, that's what allows me to identify surely a train...

Beside this , on a miniaturized layout , we can give more relief by soundproofing the hidden tracks of a layout....which is possible but a lot of work if you seek the best results...(to stop the resonance between track & wooden structure the best insulating material still remains .... the vacuum Blink ....to make the most of the rigidity of the C-track may be interesting....)

Why ESU don't make their speaker capsule airtight, I don't know.
The experience I had with the Sound decoder for the Diesel loco 218 is much louder than previous volumes.
the difference with the speaker in the BR 218 is, it is a larger speaker.
What I've done, I've inserted a wire all around the 3 hole gaps of the capsule and than press the speaker into it, there is an improvement in sound.

I will try again to add 2 larger speaker suitable for Sound decoders V4 in an airtight capsule and put it back into my American Y3a steam loco and see what improvement, if any, does occur from the my last successful try with an ESU sound decoder V3.5

Hi all,
I've just made a discovery last night: ESU Loksound V4 Railcom plus.

It is similar to mfx and M4 but it has an open protocol.
The moment you put the loco onto the track it recognizes the loco automatically with all, its functions and more.

I'm still in the beginners learning stage as I got a surprise when this symbol of the railcom plus logo came up on my ECoS. asked me different questions and in the excitement and all, I had a loco registered by itself.
Although I've already registered all my locos manually, e.g. name, loco address and speed steps, I have to figure out now how to manipulate the existing locos to the new arrivals.

Another feature has been added, when the loco goes into curves the rims squealing can be activated.

Although I'm delighted with this new feedback system, I haven't learned all the other bits and pieces as yet.

I envy all other analog model train enthusiasts, I thought they keep the digital system simple by just pressing a button.

More info will follow as I get the hang of it.
For some of you, may be it is old stuff and you've known about it years ago.

regards.,

John

I guess I will find out all about the Railcom self registration thing soon, when my ESU Br215, complete with Loksound 4, arrives from the Lokshop, in a few months time.

Hi John
Dion has been installing them as they arrived 2 weeks ago and is very impressed like you
they are certainly a step up on three, he was saying they are easier to install and liked the wider protocol

There have been problems with Railcom and eCOS.. I am not sure if all the outstanding issues have been resolved, but the last advice I remember from ESU was that Railcom should be switched off..

Adrian,

Has this comment been made on the ESU forum ?
I was going through the forum today but actually couldn't find anything regarding railcom and than I looked at an updated written user manual version and it mentioned railcom on there.

I may have another look and see if I can find anything about railcom should be turned off.
the only thin I've read, loksound decoders, railcom is already activated but not with lokpilots.

I've just rewritten the BR 01 loco, which I've downloaded the soundfile (BR 01)from that loco instead of the BR 23, it seems to have the same amount of cylinders but many more functions.
Other Version 4 lokpilots I have put onto the track and nothing has happpened, but the instruction booklet mentioned, so long the railcom plus is activated, the decoder will automatically register with the ECoS, when hitting the railcom symbol.
I just have to watch and observe were I can see the difference and how I can incorporate and change the already registered locos (version 4 decoders) and their addresses.

When I downloaded the BR 01 sound file, not being aware of the railcom plus protocol, I've read about something somewhere but put it aside as it was produced by Lenz.
I than noticed a loco had been registered under unknown loco under BR 01 and I've looked at the side of the function buttons and there are all these function symbols I've never seen before.
there must be other things in life than just sitting in front of your ECoS and observe the miracles appear in front of your eyes.

It's a pity there seems to be no mfx/m4 support with the Loksound v4.

Does this mean ESU are going to standardise on Railcom plus, and no longer supply m4 sound decoders (yes, I know the LS3 m4 is still available)?
