Hi all,

I've just taken delivery of two of these, and although the instructions are only in German, I am getting to grips with them.

The only problem I have is with the 16-pin IC sockets - because there are only 14 holes!

I'm trawling my way through the instructions but haven't been able to find out how to install the sockets onto the circuit board - or to determine which pins to cut off.

While I'm waiting for Viessmann to respond, has anyone else used this kit and resolved the question?

Hi Pete,

if the IC (Integrated Circuit) has only 14 pins, buy a 14 pins IC socket and solder it, otherwise something is wrong with the PCB and so ask Viessman.

I am not able to give other suggestions, as I do not have a 5290 kit.

Ah, would it be that easy!

No, both the socket and IC have 16 pins. The circuit board is the same as the diagram and the parts list states it's 16 pins.

Viessmann haven't responded so I'll have to wait until next week now and see what they say.

Well, not having in my hands neither the electric diagram nor the PCB, I think two holes have not be drilled.

If Viessman will not give you an answer, having a scan of the electric diagram, both sides of the PCB and the components list, I could (not 100% sure!) help you and say which holes have to be drilled.

OK, I'm a plum!

The IC sockets have 16 pins but the IC's themselves only have 14 pins.

I could buy 20 of these sockets from eBay for £2.70 all-in, so I'm tempted to do that. Unless I can get away with cutting the pins off, as I previously considered. It doesn't sound very professional, though!

I also had this in two of my Viessmann kits, I happened to have some 14 pin sockets on hand though and used them.

Good day to you all

I am looking for the circuit/building sheet of the VIESSMANN turnout decoder 5291 or specs of the PCB board. This decoder was a DIY assembling decoder sold by Viessmann. The ready unit, I suppose was the 5211.

By the way, do you have also the pcb lay-out : I mean the circuit on paper with all the connections and components drawn on it.

No, I don't have the PCB layout, sorry.

But If your compare your schema with the BOM in the 5291 doc, then it seems to match perfectly !

5291 was nothing else than a 5211 in a kit, 10 years ago.
So I'm pretty sure your schema is OK.

Hi Pete, the integrated circuits listed on the Viessmann document you supplied, are all 16 pin Dual in Line components.
None of their pins can be ignored or cut off to make fit to the Printed Circuit Board.
If you can supply close photos of both sides of the PCB, will help, so we can help looking.
Very seldom are PCB's produced with missing holes.
That PCB may also be Multi Layered so drilling into it will be destructive to the PCB.
Pins 9 and 16 specifically supply the power to the IC, so they can not be cut.
Those IC's are static sensitive, so handle with care incase they have o be returned.
Photos ?? I hope you may not have to return the kits, but sixteen holes per IC is a prerequisite.

Hello Fabrice and other Marklin users
I dare to say that the Viessmann kit and some other circuits have some issues concerning the capacitors and resistors. I found a manual (Mysterious Behaviour of Viessmann 5211 with Ecos2) from mr Walter Dorman oct 2017 in which he explains a malfunctions of certain Viessmann decoders 5211 and the building kit 5291, both from various fabrication years and production series.

Especially the capacitors/resistors connections on the IC 145027 R1/C1(pin 6&7) and R2/C2 (pin 10)
He also refers to the circuit of mr Ross Stewart in which the specific components are used viz. R3 12K C3 1nF8 (25V) and R4 270K and C4 3nF9 (25V)

Therefore I asked on this page if somebody has the circuit on paper of this particular decoder. The decoder from mr Zondervan has the same parts of which mr Dorman says they can misfunction.

I than came across another decoder from TAMS, (WD-1) . The same IC but with pin 6&7 connected to 22K and C2 1nF8, pin 10 330K and C3 3nF9. So there is a lot of variation in the Bill of Material (BOM)

So is there somebody who has built this decoder by himself and encounters some malfunction issues and has fixed these and with what parts? Reason: I want to build this decoder by my self and with things learned I can prevent malfunction.
