I have a second winecar that looks like Märklin 4432, but is coloured plain grey. I bought it second hand and it is unboxed. It can be party seen in my topic

But if you wish, I can make a picture from it.

Hi all,

I've two similar wagons from Trix, I think they are a little more realistic that the ones from Märklin and their dark colour real wood looks perfect in an ancient goods train pulled by the Prusian 55 biggrin

Here you can see them in two photos:

I think it is a typical French phenomenon, and for that reason it is surprising that Märklin is making these wine cars at all.
If you are Google-ing on French words like "wagon du vin" or "wagon bi foudre" you might find this link:

I wonder if wine producing countries like Spain, Portugal or Italy had such cars. In the USA California is well known in producing wine, so how was that wine transported?

Hi Zora,

Here I found a link with another prototypical wine waggon from a german manufacturer.
http://www.ba-bautzen.de...oren/waggonbau/guewa.htm

The german text on this links says that these wine cars have also been exported to the Soviet Union where they were propably used for liquids with a higher degree of alcool. Cool

Unfortunately the nice wooden wine barrels have completely disappeared today. They now ship their wine mostly with large trucks, in stainless steel refrigerator tanks.

Yesterday, a member from the Macintosh discussion forum provided me this link —>

It seems that today the wine is transported in a less elegant way.

Although I am into German era III, the SBB Ce 6/8 was a nice memory of the childhood ’70 yearbooks.

So I just had to have one! And some cars of course…these are my two wine cars:

I found a picture on an old Dujardin wine car, but the wooden barrels are already replaced by a steel tank. Just like the modern car I posted before. Funny that this car has six wheels. What might be the reason for doing this?

Hi Zora,
That wine car is a beauty.
You ought to put that on your wish-list of new Marklin releases.
I am sure Marklin would respond to something so good.

The third axle is due to the requirement to distribute the weight on the rails. Water (or wine) is quite heavy compared to other liquids, so the bigger the car, the more axles required. Lighter liquids include petroleum, diesel oil, spirits, and vinegar.

Most railways have a design limit for weight. An upper limit example is 20 tonnes per axle. This wine car may carry 60 tonnes on a heavy main line. If it is used on railways with a design load of 15 tonnes, it will be limited to a 45 tonne load.

In the case of a steam engine weighing 100 tonnes without tender, the designer must provide 5 axles. So he may have 2 leading axles (bogie) plus 3 driving axles, 4-6-0, or in other parlance, 2-C. That will theoretically allow 20 tonnes on each axle.

regards
Kimball

If my eyes didn't fail me, the car has a weight of 13360 kg and a payload of 28000 kg giving a maximum weight of 41360 kg. This gives less than 14 tons per axle and allows the car to be used on most routes.
With only 2 axles it would have been limited to few main lines.
Regards
Tom

Dear H-zero,
That is excellent, your are prefectly correct. The wine car being made available on any route makes perfect sense.

I never thought to check the actual dimensions and data showing on the photo.
