I've been playing with my new 39050 Insider BR-05, and I'm now rather pleased with it (after a few initial misgivings).

I've been pulling my Rheingold 4228 set with it -- and very successfully. It pulls like a train (har, har...)
I do realise this is not quite historically accurate, so I'm looking at more appropriate passenger wagons.
The catalog mentions 43232, 43242 and 43272 ("skirted" cars).

I seem to remember though, that there was a set of suitable passenger cars already available. I can't find them in the catalog, and can't remember the details [:(]

Am I imagining this, or was there a suitable "skirted" wagon set already existing?

Cheers,
Damon

Hi Damon,

The 43290 set like already mentioned by the previous posters is IMHO highly recommendable.
The set has been made in cooperation with Fleischmann,is nicely detailed and incorporates lighting of the cabins.

Kind regards

One of the "other" Rheingold sets I've just got, 43237 and 43238 would look the part... They look good with my blue/black class 03 steamer from the 29845 set.
Cheers

Hi Damon, and Stuart,

Firstly, congratulations on getting the 05. I am eagerly awaiting mine.

As for cars, any number of early era III sets would do the trick, including 43290, but of course these are un-skirted. I agree with Stuart that the "other" Rheingold sets, 43237 and 43238 would look even better. These are skirted cars, used on the principal express trains (F-zug) till 1964 and beyond. Noel at Nathan's Trains, Brisbane, lists the 43237 as available. Good buy!

I also have these, waiting for arrival of the 05. You can also see these on the Marklin product database.

However, the day you and I were in Noel's shop, he had on display behind the counter, about chest high, a 43219 set (Nathan's Trains, Brisbane). This is 2 coaches, blue, skirted, with the full lettering "DEUTSCH BUNDESBAHN" on the sides. This is quite protoypical from 1952 through to 1960 at the earliest, and would fit the 05 perfectly. It would also go with the 43237 mentioned above.
I don't think Noel has the companion set 43209 (3 blue cars with a red diner), but I guess that may be found elsewhere.

regards
Kimball

Can't wait for my 05 to arrive.
As mentioned above, I will run the 43290 Merkur first - because of the installed lighting. I have yet to light up my other cars. But that is only a 3 wagon consist.

Other combinations I have for it are:
43237/43238 Rheingold - 6 wagons
29845 (DB) / 29857 (DEUTSCH BUNDESBAHN) - 5 Starter sets wagons (leaving out a WR4ue Speisewagen).
42881 Gluckauf Express - 4 wagons.

Combining the starter sets is interesting and does not look out of place.

I suspect that my main consist will be the 42881 because of its rarity and metal finish.

Hi Tony,
Is that the Lucky Express?
I have heard of this set. Are they the metal models like the 24cm Hobby series?

Hi Tony,
That is a really nice set for metal bodies.
It makes me wonder why Marklin went on to the plastic arena. Cheaper to build maybe?

If you don't mind, how different are these to the 43290 Mercury set? I would believe they may have the same prototype. Do you think the metal ones are just as good? And does the 42881 come with the new style close coupler set.

I see you also have a 42750, which I have been looking for. That would be OK behind any of the steamers.

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball
Yep, I guess metal was outdone by the cheaper producation costs of plastic.
A real pity as the difference between the Glukauf and similar plastic sets is very, very noticeable.
I'll take some pics of the two together do you can judge.

I brought the 42750 as an add-on to the 29830 but they have different destination boards so now run as a seperate consist.

I went to our Marklin club meet last nite and ran the three 29857 cars with the two passenger cars from 29845, a 41372 baggage pulled by a 3097.10 steel-blue/black BR03.10. Very nice consist..

Andrea - the Loreley would look lovely as well.
Are they plastic or metal?

Hi,
I have the 43209 Loreley set - they are plastic. I may add a 43219 set one day to complete it. Loreley sets are for era 1951+, dark blue, skirted, with the full lettering "DEUTSCH BUNDESBAHN" on the sides. Perfect for the 05.
43237/43238 are actually the same models as the 43209/43219, with different destination boards and numbers. These are lettered "DB" for a slightly later time (guess 1958+).

Noels Price includes 10% GST so for export the price would be 163.55.

I have a train made up of 11 cars, all of them being "Schurzenwagen", from both Märklin and Liliput. This train is pulled either by a BR05(Liliput, black or red), BR06(Brawa), BR12(Liliput), BR19(Brawa), all of them with the "Adler" symbol on their sides, same as the cars.
