Hello,

I need the center rail power to be able to put an IR transmitter in the trailer of my 3676. The trailer is connected to the driving unit with a 5-pole band cable that contains chassis, function return and three wires for the lights. I tried to pull an extra wire, this is possible but it is difficult to attach the wire to the coupler in a reliable way. I thought of another idea: I could use the function return wire, and then create a new function return in the trailer like this: http://home.swipnet.se/perz/funcret.gif . Is this a good idea, or am I doing something stupid ?

Maybe I am stupid here, but what is the problem? Will you use a function supplied by the "lok" decoder? Then it should have the same return as the "lok" uses, either it's the "orange" wire or it is the chassis... If it works this way, your circuit should have the same ground potential as the "lok" as I see it... But I may not have understood the problem fully, as initially stated... <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

The IR transmitter I want to mount uses track power directly. It doesn't use a function output from the decoder. The problem is that the center rail connection is not available in the trailer. There are three decoder functions used in the trailer: front light, rear light and inner light. These functions now have their return through the "orange" wire (although it is actually red in this case).

If i re-wire the "orange"(i.e. red) wire as center rail power instead, to supply the IR transmitter with power, I no longer have a function return wire for the functions. I could use chassis as function return of cause, but that gives a terrible flickering.

I think it is possible to re-create a flicker-free function return in the way that I showed in the figure in the previous post, but I'm not 100% sure that this is correct.

I re-wired the trailer according to my original idea and it works like I expected. The lights don't flicker. This may be used in other cases too when you don't have a function return available. Probably this is a way to cure the flickering of the lights with older decoders that don't have a function return wire.
