I have one of these and the body shells are plastic. Mine has been upgraded to high efficiency and sound and is one of my favorite trains!

The 3070 Train was the SBB version.
The 3071 (at least the one I had) had very little markings and could pass for either the SBB or NS model.
The 3471 was the NS model and had interior details and delta chip.
The 39700 was the SBB model and had interior details, digital decoder and c-sinus motor.

All models had plastic shells on metal base.

The 3071 was known to have issues with the head and tail lights glowing through the plastic. This has apparently been rectified on the 3471 and 39700 versions. The 3071 also had brighter red than the other versions of the trainset.

The 3070 had a three pronged wire harness. The 3071 had a two pronged version. The 3471 and 39700 have a smaller connection with multiple contacts for digital signals and analog power supply.

Roco and RailTop (LS Models) also manufactured models of this train. Each of those models can also be run on the smaller radius (R1) but look considerably better on R2 or larger.

If you are shopping for such a model on eBay, I would probably go for the 3471 (NS) or 39700 (SBB) and skip the earlier models.

The 4070 and 4071 coaches can only be used with their corresponding sets. Neither can be used with the delta or digital versions.

Great summary, Mike.

I'd like to add that the 3471 and 39700 versions are the complete 4-unit sets (engine, 2 intermediate coaches, cab coach) whereas the older version only came as 3-part sets, with the 4070/4071 coaches being available separately to complete the train.

I have the 3070, which I digitalised with an 6090x. Great looks, however it derails ALL the time. See also the review on the 39700 in the Models review section.

I will start experimenting with adding some weights, hope that helps.

Could you be more specific regarding derailing ?
No train should derail.
there must be some interference for the train to derail.
Let me know and I may can help you fix the problem.

I have the 3471 Tee rail car now converted to high propulsion with Loksound MFX decoder & all lighting done with led's. I really enjoy this model & it is one of my favourites. It does however derail when operating in reverse specifically through my set of reverse curves & it in itself is not derailing but what is causing it to derail is the two black plastic bits that sit between the coaches that snag up on each other. I have run this heaps of times & as John said in one of his comments, "look & listen". That is how I discovered the problem. Hope it helps. It is not what one would normally look for.

The 3070 had silver window framing and the 3071 didn't. The 3070 was illuminated and many models suffered from warpage, related to the lighting or just plastics, I don't know but common. The 3071 came in two shades of red as did the extra car so if you're a stickler for matching cars then see if what you buy as a set has the same tones.

I have a 3071 converted to Delta. It runs through S-curves in pull and push mode. The cause of derailing is IMHO that the couplers are not connected right. It takes some care to get them connected in the right way. You could try if this improves behaviour.

I have seen several 3071s with derailing pilot car when I was running a Marklin service Station.
Even my own exemplar showed that problem on Metal track.
It is essentially due to the interaction between the pick shoe and switches, when the pick up is pushed up by the raised contact studs to cross the switch.
Usually adjusting down the pressure of the pick up solves the problem, but then you may run into poor contact.
The only "sure thing" I found was to to increase the pressur of teh pick up add 30 to 50 grams of ballast weight on the front bogie of the pilot car.

In my case with the TEE I had trouble with one of the middel cars derailing, not the pilot car (that still does not derail),
The solution with the extra weight above the slider bogie did solve the similar problem with derailing of my NS ICM (see avatar).
