Just saw that the status for the 41928 has changed biggrin

Soon my BR18.3 can be used for its intended purpose....

Are the colours on the 41928 the same as the 4228 set? From the brochure, it seems to be more of a creme and purple, rather than the creme / royal blue of the 4228.

AFAIK the colours are more like the earlier released 26506 Rheingold set, i.e. purple / creme.

And fully back on topic: I'm really looking forward to this set, great the waiting game is almost over... Smile

Yes, the 18.3 / 18.4's were used to pull this train, but I'm told the BR01 was the more common sight pulling the Rheingold's.

Sorry Goofy, I'm told the BR01 was more commonly used than the BR18 / S 3/6 in pulling the Rheingold.

I have pictures!!!!!!! Dont know if they prove anything but:

1928 pulled by 18 520
Undated picture pulled by 38 2493
1934 pulled by 01 069
1938 pulled by 18 527

So not only can you pull it with the class 01 and 18, but also with the class 38 if you so desire!

You could also concievably pull it with the E 19 BUT I am unsure if this actually happened. The pictures I have got dont have any catenary above the track!!!!

Here is a bit of text from an article on WikiPedia:

The first Rheingold (trains FFD 101 and FFD 102) started service on May 15, 1928. In The Netherlands it was pulled by the 3700-3800-3900 steam locomotive series, in Germany by the Baureihen 18.3 (Badic IVh, between Mannheim and Basel) and BR 18.4-5 (Bavarian S 3/6, between Emmerich and Mannheim) and in Switzerland by Ae 4/7 electric locomotives. In 1930, the BR 01 (01 077-181) was used between Mannheim and Basel and permanently from 1935 on, and the NS 3900 in Holland.

I think the Jury would be out on this one. I dont think the Class18.1 was a regular for the rheingold, but in its favor is the fact that the Rheingold did run through Wurttemberg, so its a case of never say never.

If it was me, I would use it.

The modern Rheingold (that in your picture) epoch 3 onwards for use with Electric locomotives such as E103.

The 41928 Rheingold epoch 2 for use all Ep2 steam locos such as 37112.

Picked my set up at my dealer on the way home from the office today - very, very nice indeed! It's been a long wait, but most definitely worth it.

I'll hopefully get the lighting installed over the weekend, after which I'll try to get a few pictures.
Cheers,

The leaflet also explains quite understandable how to install the function decoder (ESU LokPilot fx #52621 will be a direct fit) and how to switch the interior and table lights and the red rear lights digitally as well as how to solder the supplied pad pcb for function decoders w/o mtc interface.

It is furthermore possible to switch interior and table lights independent by replacing the delivered electric conducting coupling with a double pin type (male and female). Maybe I'll describe this enhancement in the HO or Digital section at a later time.

Thanks for the lokpilot cat.number.

Lutz,

Personally, I would be very interested in a description of how to implement independent switching of the interior and table lights!

Unfortunately, I seem to have come across a problem with my luggage car from the set. My dealer only had 4 x 73400 in stock, so I first installed interior lighting in the luggage car (1,5 x 73400) and one of the passenger cars (2 x 73400) and tested that it worked. I then went on to install an ESU LokPilot fx #52620 (w/o mtc interface) as shown on the included soldering diagram, programmed the decoder with my CS1 and then entered the decoder details in the CS2. F2 switched the red rear lights on and off as expected, but F1 had no effect, all table lamp and interior lighting remained on.

In fact, I realised that the interior and table lights are constantly on, even without the included bridging plug in place! The red rear lights are off without the bridging plug, so I am wondering if the switching relay is faulty. Anyway, I'll pass the dealer tomorrow and see if he still has a few sets in stock...
Cheers,
Søren

Hi Lutz,

I've finally tried to fit an ESU 52621 decoder to my 41928 baggage car, and I've found that it doesn't fit! If you look at the photo below, you will see that the pins on the connection in the baggage car are the wrong way round for the decoder, and the wall that is part of the interior of the car prevents the fitting of the decoder. As you can see in the photo, when the decoder is turned over to line up the pins with the sockets, pin 1 is at the wrong end.

This is rather a shame!

UserPostedImage

So it's back to the much less elegant solution of connections with cables.

Hi Nigel,

I'm puzzled, your photo appears to document exactly the oposite of what you say?

It appears that the "null" socket is aligned with the pin. Am I viewing it wrong?

Luis,

No - you're viewing it correctly!

Nigel, it needs to go on with the components facing up - positioned just like in the picture.

Yes, Luis, you are viewing it wrong (sorry!)! The decoder must be turned over from the side shown in the photo, so that the sockets match up with the pins, and then the pins are in the opposite place to where they should be! The decoder only has the sockets on one side - the other side has solder points and components.

I hope this makes sense!

Yes, I agree with this too. The interior lights always seem to be on.

The supplied 2-pole cable that connects the 73400 lighting units to the chassis on the baggage car seems to be directly connected to the pickup shoe and to the wheels/ground. Removing the bridging plug does not change this. There needs to be a way to connect the lighting, and the current-conducting couplers, to the output from the relay, but I can't see a way of doing this.

With my ESU 52621 decoder connected (using wires), F1 makes the relay switch over, and F2 turns on the tail lights. But the interior lights are permanently on.

Has anyone managed to make the interior lights switchable with a decoder in this set?

Any helpful suggestions welcome!

I don't really see your problem [:I]

The decoder shall be connected like it shows in the picture as Søren says...

As you also can read in the manual, page 11, for your decoder it shall be connected with the socket up wink
You can download the manual from this link : http://www.esu.eu/downlo...eitungen/digitaldecoder/

Yes, you're right - I've found the way to do it. There was a sticker over the back of the decoder that obscured the tiny holes where the pins can fit if the decoder is fitted socket up! I removed the sticker and it now fits correctly.

Everything works now, including F1 for interior lights and F2 for tail lights. Thanks for your help!
