Yesterday I decided to carry out a conversion of a BR 185 of the Hobby series, with the circuit board that allows you to plug in a decoder with a NEM plug.
I did all my soldering and plugged the decoder, an ESU 61600 mfx, then was time to put the loco on the track for recognition.
It started, took some time, but then completed succesfully, the only strange thing that happened, was that the CS went blank for, say, 5 seconds, then the screen came back.
I renamed the loco and checked the function mapping, here the grid was missing, I had the first column, but then the grid boxes, those where you can tick the function or not, were all missing.
I decided for a CS reboot, pressed the Stop for 5 seconds, then when the display said it was safe, unplugged the power cord.
Waited for a while and then restarted the CS, still the function mapping was missing.
Pressed the Stop for 5 seconds and this time the screen went blank and the Stop button remained lighted, I unplugged the power after a while, nothing, still lighted.
Decided to remove the batteries and finally it shuts off.
I started to mumble on what was going on and after a minute or so re-plugged the power, the CS did the boot routine, but when it was time to lit the green "GO" button, the screen remained completely blank with the "STOP" red button on.
Holy cow!!![:0][xx(][:(!]
Was about dinner time, then decided to leave the power off for the time being and try again later.
Later on still nothing, red button on and a blank screen, I started to look for the address of the authorized service here, Ciciesse in Milan...[:(]
While watching Dr. House, I thought "What if the web server still runs? I can do a reset to factory setting" then the successive re-start was with the network cable on, hopefully the address setting was retained and I was able to access the CS web pages, then I went for a restore to factory setting.
It took a while, but luck wants that I had a blank, but finally working CS.
I didn't have a backup of the configuration, so I exported the layout and catalog from LC back into the CS, I had all the locos and switches back in, the only thing I have to put the switches and signals back on the accessories controller "cards" and place all the MFX locos at least once back on the track.
Pheeew!!!

I think if I ever get back into playing with decoder settings I will probably look for a control box that allows me to do so with a normal PC. There's a device called SPROG II which allows DCC users to do this, so a similar one must exist for Marklin.

You can have my 6022 when they manage to make something as sensibly priced and robust as the Lenz DCC range!
