Hello everybody,
Is there anyone that has experience or owns the 46715 Crane Car Set with Working Digital Functions? I am thinking to get that for my layout and was wondering how good is it, what are the cons for this set etc. Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Sebastian,
My son and I purchased the 46715 a few weeks ago at the Big E show in Springfield MA. We did a few tests of its functions using the Mobile Station. First we had to delete one of the locos due to the 10-decoder limit (not the fault of the 46715). I was unable to get the MS to "recognize" the 46715 so reverted to using its preset address of 77 and using that to set it up on the MS. I don't have the Central Station, so can't tell you if it would work better with that controller. I think that it would be easier to control using the 6021 rather than the MS, but ours is packed away right now. Because the functions don't show up on the MS, one has to do trial and error to determine which button raises the boom, which one raises the cable, and which one rotates the crane. It should have good play value for my 8 year old son once we get our new layout built and relearn everything we tested. We'll have a nice salvage train once we combine it with my old blue crane with the hand crank.

Right after our "road test", we dismantled the tabletop layout and packed everything up to permit some construction in the room that will house our new layout. I hope we can get back to the model railroad in early March.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi Sebastian,

there were a few info and different threads about the crane set 46715 here a little while ago. From my point of view it's a must to have for little money.
Maybe you try the search function and 46715, this wil bring you loads of threads to the little crane.

If you have an Intellibox you may like controlling it with from a computer.. see http://layout.mixmox.com/1/mobile_crane

You can't do two functions at the same time.
It's ok, not one of the best items M has released. Watchout for the string which raises and lowers the crane. its only thread and can jam or break.

In spite of the fact that I can't get this working with the my Intellibox (especially now that it has decided to take an extended holiday), I really think that Marklin did a great job with this crane.. Yes it is a little clumsy in that you can only do one thing at a time, but this IS a very small crane and a very large step for realistic model railroad operation.. Miss 7 adores it...

Mine works just fine, i'm just a little disapointed about the lifting-strength of it.
Can't handle much..

How much can it handle? Can it lift let's say a two axle freight car? Or even that is too big for the small crane?

lifting capability is almost zero. I tried to lift the empty plastic crate that comes with the center depressed car and if the boom is away from the track, the crane will topple over. The crane has no stabilisers and is not heavy enough even IF the motors were stronger.

Hi Sebastian,

it is simply a great toy and nice to play with!!!

Here are some pictures which should give you some "taste" of that.

To get the corresponding Central or Mobile Station screen/function display you simply chose product #49981 and change its adress to 77.

Thanks Lutz for the info. Like always, you're very helpful. I was just kidding that I wish to cancel the order. The fact that it can or not lift anything is not a the utmost important characteristic of the model. In the end, we just want to have fun on the layout and see the gems running around. When the crane arrives, I will test it and I hope I can ask again if there are issues.

Hi Rainer,

there's no need to have your own webspace for pics.
Just look for http://imageshack.us or other providers where you can upload your pics free of charge and then place the link here.
That's the way Lutz and lots of others do it around here.

Hi Rainer, forum,

the reason why I prefer posting most of my pictures using the (free of charge!) ImageShack facility is quite simple.

I can place the small picture (i.e. thumbnail) within the text are which doesn't take much space (and loading time for those who don't have yet DSL or similar "light speed" Cool PC connections.

By clicking on the picture as Nevy explained, you'll still be able to both view and download the full size picture, if desired.

I also made a mistake in the past by placing too large pictures within my message, but with the "friendly help" of other forum members I stopped this very quickly! biggrin

One more little hint (also provided by another member here): If you put the thumbnail picture url in quotes, only the thumbnail will be shown instead of the complete link; like this one below ("URL" and "IMG" were substituted in this example by "abc" and "xyz" for visibility):

[abc=http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?image=briefglmaerklinkingsbrilx0.jpg][xyz]http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3097/briefglmaerklinkingsbrilx0.th.jpg[/xyz][/abc]

[abc="http://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?image=briefglmaerklinkingsbrilx0.jpg"][xyz]http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3097/briefglmaerklinkingsbrilx0.th.jpg[/xyz][/abc]

Some more additions to the little crane.

The issue of bending (falling) over was present with the crane since it was first introduced in the fifties of last century - and they exist with ANY crane if it should lift a load that exceeds the side stability.

Just imagine you'd want to lift that famous banana box (which really has changed its shape towards a banana during the last decades! biggrin) and swing it over with the arm fully extended - NO WAY without some help.

UserPostedImage

IMHO there are (at least) two possible solutions - more or less the same as can be seen at the Goliath:

- rearside compensation weight(s)
- base support/stands

Since the first doesn't seem to be very easy nor good looking I apply the second when playing with this nice toy. I clip magnets (attached to the track) with metal extenders at the shunters stands and by this the crane keeps upright even with the heaviest possible load and fully extended arm. The magnets and steel cylinders are actually those of my Goliath, but you can surely use anything else that serves the same purpose.

Hello to all helpers,
Hope You can see the picture.
I mad a template using M# 39340 .
-lay a piece of paper over your MS
-mark where you cut out the buttoms you use
first and third on left side and third on right. make cut long enough, so you can see the function
-under the buttoms there is room to write the function
first b. = cabin
third b. = rope third b. = boom
next to each function mark the direction, because ,if you cut on the third buttom deep
enough you see this arrows and therefore you will know all times the right direction.
Now, when You use the crane, lay template on Your MS and it is easy to use.
I clued the paper in a plasticcover with a lip on top and it stays where it belongs.
The same number I did also on my CS. There You can even change the view of the function.

Have fun, Rainer

Hi all,

My wife got our kids and me one for a gift. They haven't seen it yet but I just had a quick test.

Here's my emoticon biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Sure it's noisey, and a little hard to control (at least with a 6021). But those are inconsequential to the unadulterated pleasure of watching it swing and raise the boom and hook. Can't wait to show the kids tonight. We'll have to make some containers and be careful of toppling over....boy this is going to be fun.

Hi Per,

I am not sure the crane vs kids is a fair trade, though on some days wink.

Hi Nev,
she knew about the crane but had not seen it. She has little interest in the trains for herself but is supportive of my interest. Unfortunately last night was hectic so no time to share the crane with the kids. In fact it will probably have to wait until the week-end the way the week is shaping up.

I have 3 kids and they all get to control the speed of the trains and whistles etc using the 6021. My eldest is 7 and he had to learn the train numbers in order to switch between trains...a game of memory not available with the CS/mfx combo. I think these Piezo electric motors open up a lot more possibilities to make playing with trains more interactive, a great move forward for the hobby as long as costs can be kept under control.
